Dyno Results: Here’s How Much Horsepower The 2.7-Liter 2021 Ford Bronco Badlands Makes At The Wheels

2021 Ford Bronco Badlands — 5 Star Tuning
The folks at 5 Star Tuning are working to crank up the horsepower and torque on the Bronco — and here are the results so far. (Images: 5 Star Tuning)

How much more power can you get out of a 2021 Ford Bronco?

At stock, Ford rates the 2021 Ford Bronco at 330 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque — at least at the crank. But what does that translate to at the wheels? Our friends over at 5 Star Tuning currently has a 2.7-liter version of Ford’s brand new SUV in Badlands trim to tweak, and they set to work seeing what sort of potential increases you can get from the stock engine.

5 Star’s runs saw about 289 horsepower and 382 lb-ft of torque at the wheels in stock tune.

Using a JB4 tuner, 5 Star ran their Bronco through three different mapping runs — with each step putting out a bit more power and torque. Stock, the Bronco managed 288.9 horsepower and 382.3 lb-ft of torque at the wheels, or about a 13% reduction in horsepower and 8% power in torque from the crank to the wheels, per Ford’s official specs.

Find deals on new and used vehicles through (in collaboration with Detroit Trading™) here!

The first run improved those figures to 309.4 horsepower and 414.6 lb-ft of torque. As opposed to the stock tune, each of the maps 5 Star included in their dyno runs show a shift in the peak torque from 3,500 RPM to about 3,750 RPM. It’s a similar story to achieve peak horsepower, with a stronger pull in the 3,500-4,000 RPM range before both horsepower and torque start to drop off.

The first and third runs both saw substantial improvements using the JB4 tuner.

The best results

After run 2 (313.9 horsepower and 413.4 lb-ft of torque), the third mapping brought the best results that 5 Star disclosed from their testing. In that state of tune, the 2.7-liter-equipped 2021 Ford Bronco managed 325.3 horsepower and 422 lb-ft of torque. Those are roughly the same figures Ford advertises, though this time you’re actually getting that sort of grunt onto the road.

You can check out 5 Star’s tuner here.

2021 Ford Bronco Badlands — 5 Star Tuning

While we just have dyno runs at the moment and not any comparative data (like 0-60 times), there’s no doubt a notable boost in power and torque will help make the Bronco quicker. Our Bronco — albeit having the Sasquatch package, unlike 5 star’s rig — was remarkably slow at a mile above altitude (over 10 seconds). Tuning would certainly help there, though it’s worth noting that you should always consult with a firm who knows what they’re doing to strike the best balance between improved performance and longevity.

5 Star is also working on the 2.3-liter, four-cylinder EcoBoost Bronco, so we should see some results with that model soon.

Acura’s Very First 2022 NSX Type S Sells For $1.1 Million At Charity Auction: News

2022 Acura NSX Type S
The first of 350 Acura NSX Type S examples went for over $1 million during Monterey Car Week. (Images: Acura)

First VINs draw big bucks at auction, and this NSX is no exception.

This is a bit of a bittersweet one for NSX enthusiasts out there. Sure, the new Type S variant looks great and manages 600 horsepower. On top of that healthy bump in power, owners can choose to add on a $13,000 lightweight package (among other options) to the car’s $171,495 base price. The down side, though, is that this is the last NSX of the current generation, and only 350 are up for grabs. After this weekend’s Mecum auction in Monterey, California, it’s actually more like 349 — as the very first example went for a whopping $1.1 million.

It’s certainly not exceptional to see VIN 001 examples go for major money. Rick Hendrick of Hendrick Motorsports and Hendrick Automotive Group dropped the money on this particular car, with the proceeds going to the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio. That’s an institution just down the road from Acura’s own Marysville, Ohio performance center, as well as a fitting beneficiary given the car’s technological prowess.

Despite this NSX Type S being relatively rare on its own, just 70 of the 350 total production run will come in this Gothan Gray Matte Metallic color. VIN 001 is one of those cars, and it also comes with that Lightweight Package. I’d expect to see the other examples trade hands for quite a bit of cash, but this Acura still pulling in a seven-figure sum is a feat, with the money going to a great cause — a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) education program.

Ask Nathan: Return of the Lamborghini Countach, Bronco Sport Vs. Jeep Compass And A Used Subaru Baja?

Lamborghini Countach

In this week’s Ask Nathan:

  • What’s up with the returning Lamborghini Countach?
  • Choosing between the Bronco Sport and Jeep Compass.
  • Should I buy a used Subaru Baja?

The first question comes from a fan who wants to know if the upcoming Lamborghini Countach is the real deal.

Lamborghini Countach

Q: (Via: NathanAdlen@Twitter) I was hoping TFL can help me learn more about the new Lamborghini Countach

I saw a teaser, but I want to know more. Do you think Lamborghini will bring back manual transmissions for it? I hope so! It looks promising and I hope it is the real deal and not a performance poser!

— SunnuScooter

Lamborghini Countach

A: That’s a good question!

What you’ve been hearing about is a limited production hybrid based on the Aventador platform. While it looks like a modern Lamborghini Countach – it isn’t. It comes with an 802 horsepower (combined), hybridized 6.5-liter V12 engine. It’s similar to the Sián‘s setup, but with a completely unique exterior design.

Lamborghini Countach

Sadly, there will be no manual transmission option. It comes with a single-clutch, seven-speed transmission. According to Lambirghini, it can go from 0 to 60 mph in 2.,8 seconds, and it has a top speed of 224 mph. Compared to the original Countach, it is (much) larger, faster and efficient. It’s also expected to be more comfortable and reliable. No surprise there.

Also, there will only be 112 built – all of which are already spoken for, at a reported, $2.6 million a pop. You can read more about the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 here.

Damn, this thing is sexy!

The next question comes from a fan who is in the market for a Bronco Sport, or a Jeep Compass. He wants to know if we can put together a comparison video.

Q: Bronco Sport vs. Jeep Compass

Hi Nathan, it’s Robert from Biloxi and I am a huge fan of all of your TFL channels! I see a lot of competitors who totally give off the vibe that they are not into cars. But TFL is different! You guys are all gear heads in one way or another., None of you seem to be going through the motions just to sell a video. I am thankful for that!

I know its hard to pull vehicles together whenever you fans ask for something. But I wanted to know if you guys would think about comparing the Jeep Compass Trailhawk against the Ford Bronco Sport Badlands? They are just begging TFL to take both up into the mountains!

Also I am considering buying one of these in October. Some of the incentives for the Jeep Compass are pretty good right now. Anyway, I wanted to tell you guys that I enjoy all the hard work you put into your content. No one even comes close to TFL!

— Robert

A: Hi Robert, thanks for the email!

I totally agree with you; the Bronco Sport vs Jeep Compass would be an epic video!

You’re absolutely right about it being difficult too. Part of it is a question of logistics regarding the automakers and our schedules. There are very few Ford Bronco Sports (and even fewer Jeep Compasses) kicking around in various fleets. We are working closely with both automakers on a variety of different new car debuts, and these two are not.

It’s frustrating, and the potential for an amazing video weighs on all of us. I promise that we will do our best to get these vehicles together as soon as we possibly can.

Thanks for your support!

The last question comes from a fan who’s thinking about buying a Subaru Baja.

Image: Subaru

Q: (via Twitter@NathanAdlen) Quick question: which Subaru Baja would you buy if it was your money?

I am seriously thinking about a Subaru Baja. I am a single guy with a dog and I ride bikes and do small DIY projects. The prices for these new mini trucks (Santacruz and Maverick) are killing me. I think the Baja is a good alternative. Would you get the turbo or non turbo?

— Anonymous

A: Great question!

I have driven both, and (obviously) the turbo is a more exciting drive – especially with the five-speed manual option. On the other hand, the NA 2.5 H4 is said to be more efficient and reliable. Furthermore, I was told by a major Baja fanboy that the 2005/2006 Baja is the one to get. They have better ground clearance, more kit and more optional goodies.

I agree that it’s a good alternative to these new mini pickups, if you have small items to haul.

Any other Subaru Baja fans out there have additional suggestions?

Video: Is The New 2022 Toyota GR 86 The BEST Budget Sports Car?

Toyota GR86

2022 Toyota GR86 overview

The 2022 Toyota GR86 is back with a new sense of style and a very welcome power boost. Though the GR86 is not turbocharged like some had hoped, the previous 2.0L flat-four has been swapped for a 2.4-liter. As a result, horsepower now sits at 228, and 184 lb-ft of torque.

An extra 23 horsepower is always welcome, but the biggest difference in the new powertrain comes down to torque. The peak torque has jumped to 184 lb-ft, from 156, but the new engine also makes its peak torque 3,000 RPM sooner. Thankfully the new GR86 weighs within 100lbs of the car it replaces, right around 2,800lbs.

2022 GR86

The design

Toyota also updated the chassis with increased rigidity to take advantage of the GR86 Premium’s 18-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. However, at a glance the new GR86’s styling is the most noticeable update. While the old 86 was by no means unattractive, its design has aged since its 2012 launch.

The new shape uses Toyota’s fresh design language with some hints of GR Supra mixed in. The updated interior stands out thanks to its digital gauge cluster and improved materials. Though the 8″ infotainment screen is nothing too special, Alcantara accents on the seats and doors of the Premium go a long way.

GR86 Premium

The new Toyota GR86 comes in two trims, GR86 and GR86 Premium. The base model uses a 17″ wheel with Michelin Primacy HP tires instead of the previously mentioned 18″ Pilot Sports. The Premium also adds features such as a ducktail spoiler, two extra speakers, Alcantara accents, and heated seats.

All new 86’s use a Torsen limited-slip differential, and can be specced with either a 6-speed manual, or automatic transmission. Zero to 60 times are 6.1 seconds for the manual, and 6.6 for the auto. The Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 Is A Modern Take On An ’80s Classic: News

Lamborghini Countach
The modern Lamborghini Countach pays homage to the original 1970s design, but this one will be even rarer. (Images: Lamborghini)

Meet the new Countach that’s twice as quick as the old one.

Of course, raw speed isn’t really the name of game with the resurrected, legendary Countach. It’s more about the shape and that name, but nevertheless it’s good to know this limited-edition car still brings power, presence and speed to the table. This time around, you get a hybridized 6.5-liter V12 engine, similar to the Sián — although this one puts out a mere 802 horsepower. The Countach LPI 800-4, as this new one’s called, will see just 112 examples, each making the 0-60 sprint in 2.8 seconds according to Lamborghini’s official release.

While this new car shares more in common with its modern stablemates, especially the Aventador, it also brings in plenty of faithful styling features to the original. There are no massive wings or plastic bodywork extensions as we saw in the later cars, but instead a clean wedge shape that sticks to what premiered with the original LP400 back in 1974. The sides have much larger intakes to feed cooling air to that modern V12, and this version’s body is entirely made from carbon fiber. Scissor doors are, of course, present here — the trend that started with the OG Countach — and out back you get triple LED taillights on each side and an even better look at the classic wedge shape. Then there are the huge quad exhaust pipes.

Lamborghini Countach

Overall, the new Lamborghini Countach weighs in at just 3,510 pounds — pretty remarkable, considering it’s technically a hybrid. We are just talking about a 33 horsepower electric motor though, which makes 802 horsepower when coupled to the 769 horsepower engine. That’s slightly less power than the Sián, but still good enough for a 221 mph top speed. Like the Aventador, the Countach packs a single-clutch 7-speed transmission. In terms of dimensions, the new car is 14.9 inches wider (let that sink in for a second), 2.8 inches higher and 29 inches longer than the original. That said, it does share its 106.3-inch wheelbase with that of the Aventador.

Lamborghini Countach

Inside is what you’d expect from a modern Lamborghini

Inside, the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 shares most of its styling and switchgear with the Aventador and the Sián. A digital instrument cluster is a given, as is an 8.0-inch touchscreen display. There’s a stark contrast going on in the images Lamborghini showed as well, thanks to the black-against-red elements.

Want one? Well, there are a couple things likely holding you back from buying the new Lamborghini Countach. One is the price — reported to fall somewhere in the $2.6 million range. In other words, about ten Urus SUVs. and the other is that all 112 examples are apparently spoken for.

Good News, Acura Purists — The Integra Is Actually Coming Back: News

Acura Integra teaser
Definitely not something I expected. (Images: Acura)

You expect crossovers, maybe a sports sedan…but a sports coupe?

Every automaker needs a halo — and that’s exactly what the NSX (below) is. There, you get just 350 examples of a 600 horsepower supercar, but does it make sense to build a new sports coupe? We’ve seen the Acura TLX Type S sedan, then expected (and received) the MDX Type S crossover, because performance crossovers are a thing. But now, the Integra is making a comeback in 2022.

Acura NSX
With the NSX Type S taking its bow, there’s an opening for a new halo in Acura’s lineup.

Yes, that Integra.

This is definitely out of left field, and a sign that Acura’s continuing to dig back toward its performance and enthusiast roots. Beyond this teaser, there’s little technical information as to how the brand will follow up one of its biggest icons. That said, vice president Jon Ikeda promised it would embody the fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original, and we can see the TLX-like styling — with the Integra name carved into the bumper like the cars of yesteryear.

Acura Integra
2001 Acura Integra Type R.

Odds are, we’re looking at a hot front-wheel drive (possibly all-wheel drive) model that shares its platform with the updated 2022 Honda Civic. It will still be a coupe, naturally, and have a turbocharged engine, paired to — fingers crossed — a 6-speed manual transmission. In other words, think of it as Acura’s complement to the Civic Si and Type R. That could possibly explain why Honda decided to kill off the Civic Coupe in this generation as well, beyond the low take rate. Make the coupe a more premium, enthusiast’s proposition for the relative few who actually want to go that route, and hey presto, you have the Integra.

Whichever direction Acura decides to move here, it will be exciting to see the Integra (and its inevitable Type S variant) back on the roads.

Ford Announces Sweeping Fix (Including More Hardtop Delays) To Address Bronco Hardtop Quality Issues: News

2021 Ford Bronco production
Ford is taking steps to address the issues with their molded-in-color (MIC) hardtops on the 2021-2022 Ford Bronco SUVs. (Images: Ford, TFLoffroad)

If you already have a Bronco or you’re waiting on your order, here’s an update.

Bronco6G forum members have recently been sharing a fair bit about the MIC hardtop quality issues affecting 2021 Ford Bronco SUVs. This latest post carries a wealth of information, including which Broncos are impacted (TL;DR — Ford says all Broncos manufactured through late July are affected) and what Ford is doing to tackle the issue if you already own a Bronco, or you’re still waiting to take delivery on your order.

What exactly is going on?

The hardtop issues are problematic enough that Ford’s going to replace all MIC hardtops for current owners. According to an owner FAQ sheet included in the post, those without a scheduled production date for a 2021 Ford Bronco will have their production delayed. Unless you ordered a First Edition, all other 2-door and 4-door hardtop models will arrive in the 2022 model year. At the moment, Ford forecasts 2022 model year production to start in December, with the Michigan Assembly Plant focusing on remaining 2021 orders first.

If you’re a hardtop Bronco order holder who does have a scheduled build slot, your Bronco will also be delayed. Ford says it will provide updated order timing (after it kicks off replacing the old MIC hardtops) in October 2021.

Those who have already taken delivery of their 2021 Ford Bronco will get a replacement hardtop when they’re available. In a dealer communication, Ford notes it does not have replacement parts ready to make repairs just yet, but it will start sending those out in September.

The instrument panel is inspired by the first-generation Bronco, with intuitive, clearly visible LED gauges and controls in this prototype version of the all-new 2021 Bronco four-door (not representative of production model). (Static display on private property with aftermarket accessories not available for sale.)

What can I do to get my Bronco sooner?

Until your order is actually scheduled for production, you can make changes without losing your place in line.

If you aren’t keen to wait out getting your hardtop Bronco as you originally ordered it, there are a few courses of action you can take. At least, beyond cancelling your order outright. Changing over to a soft top Bronco should make a difference, as Ford says soft-top production isn’t affected. To date, Ford claims they have received over 190,000 reservations — so cancelling your order or picking low-availability options will likely impact your delivery date.

Avoiding certain other options will also improve your odds of getting a Ford Bronco sooner, rather than later. Beyond the hardtop roof, high demand and low parts availability will come into play should you order the Wildtrak trim, a Sasquatch Package, the larger 2.7-liter V6 engine, the Lux Package, the Trailer Tow Package, or the Safari Bar. If you do actually switch over to a soft top with the intent of eventually getting a hardtop, then keep in mind you’ll have to wait until 2023, when the hardtop roof is slated to go on sale as an accessory.

Right now, your best bet to getting a Bronco sooner is by opting for the soft top, rather than the MIC hardtop.

How is Ford making this right?

For all the trouble, there are some extras you can get for waiting out a new Bronco order. If you reserved your 2021 Bronco before March 19, 2021, Ford will offer MSRP protection through model year 2023. Apart from what could be an ominous warning about how long it’s going to take the Blue Oval to sort out the glut of Bronco orders, you won’t have to pay more as time goes on (and Ford inevitably raises the price for new buyers in 2022 and 2023).

Current reservation holders will also get $1,100 in FordPass reward points to put toward accessories for their Bronco. The company mentions fold-out tray tables, door bags, roof racks and off-road lights — but again, what you’ll actually be able to get may come down to parts availability, so keep that in mind when you’re putting those points to use. Hardtop customers will get sound deadening material free of charge, while 4-door softtop buyers will get a hardtop prep kit for free from September 2021 onward.

If your reservation does end up carrying over to a 2022 model Bronco, there are a few updates coming down the pike. New special editions are coming, as are new paint colors. 4-door versions with the Sasquatch Package will get a roof rack option, while you’ll be able to spec the Sasquatch Package with the 7-speed manual transmission. Ford will announce more details on the 2022 updates later this year.

If you want to see the new Bronco in action, check out our latest excursion on TFLoffroad below:

Rivian Reportedly In Talks To Build Its Next Plant Near Fort Worth, Texas: News

Rivian R1S
As Rivian prepares to launch its first vehicles, it’s also eyeing expansion with a second factory. (Images: Rivian)

Fort Worth, Texas is just one of the sites reportedly under consideration for Rivian’s next U.S. plant.

Last month, reports cited Rivian’s ‘Project Tera’, including the company’s plans to build out a second manufacturing facility somewhere in the U.S. Now, Bloomberg reports the EV startup is in talks to invest $5 billion into a new factory near Fort Worth, Texas. In the process, Rivian would boost its manufacturing capacity by 200,000 units annually, and create 7,500 new jobs in the area within the next six years.

In considering the city for this new plant, the city’s Economic Development Department is proposing as much as $440 million in grants and tax incentives to the city council to entice Rivian to move there. People familiar with the matter have said that Fort Worth is the current frontrunner for the new facility, though other states and cities are still in contention. $2 billion of that total investment will reportedly go toward purchasing the real estate, while $1.6 billion will go toward construction costs.

At the moment, Rivian has not made a public comment on the report.

Robert Sturns, as Fort Worth’s director of economic development, said that the city “is very excited to be a finalist for this project and looks forward to continuing the process.” Other large automakers have major operations in Texas, including Toyota and Tesla, which is building out a new assembly plant outside Austin.

If Rivian decides to go with Fort Worth, the site will reportedly be on a 2,000-acre site about 12 miles from the city.
