Electro Magnificent: The 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE [First Impression]

2015, toyota, camry, hybrid, sport
Toyota did a great job making the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE more than a mellow, humdrum, people mover. It has a new body, new interior and it has been heavily upgraded. Those two magic letters “SE” lift the hybrid to another level.

Not much change under the hood of the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE, from last year’s Camry Hybrid. The 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, which is connected to an electric motor and battery pack, makes a combined 200 horsepower. Power is sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with just enough zing to make on-ramps somewhat entertaining.

2015, toyota, camry, interior, dash, seats

The real news, the very best part of the 2015 Toyota Camry SE is the sporty upgrades. black headlight surrounds, sport fabric seats silver interior accents a leather-wrapped steering wheel a rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels and (the pièce de résistance) a sport-tuned suspension.
Around town, the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE drives like the last Camry Hybrid with a little bit of road noise and a hint of engine drone thanks to the CVT. Things change when you open up the tap and charge into a few corners. The sport-tuned suspension and beefed-up rubber help the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE hold the corners with enthusiasm. There is no real steering feel, but the steering effort is on the verge of being sporty.

The bottom line: the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE is kind of fun to drive. That may read like a backhanded compliment; however, how many cars out there that get 40 mpg (combined)that are enjoyable to drive? Not too many. Most of the other Camry Hybrids get a combined 41 mpg, credit that to tires as the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE’s wheels and rubber are not as efficient – but, they sure look good.

2015, toyota, camry, rear, tail

Best of all, the $32,233 (as tested) 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE looks mighty good in its new digs. Body lines move upward as they approach the Camry’s rear and the silhouette is downright sleek. Best of all, the front end (which has a unique grill for SE) is complimented by the rear-end’s design. The old Camry was disconnected and tawdry by comparison.
The interior is a tasteful rehash of the Toyota Avalon’s interior – which is to say it’s quite nice. Most materials are high quality, the layout is tasteful, seats are comfortable front and back. The trunk has 13.1 cu-ft of cargo space with a small pass-through on the folding (larger) section of the seatback. Only the passenger side folds as the rest of the rear bulkhead is filled with batteries.

Extra sound-deadening material and (standard) heated seats would have been welcome additions.

First impressions are good and I have taken the 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE into the snow too. Traction was good and stopping ability (on snow, ice and tarmac) is quite good. So far, it’s an easy to drive compromise that’s not really much of a compromise.

Not too shabby Toyota.

Mercedes-Benz F 015 Concept Shows Future Today [Preview]

Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury iin Motion

What car can pilot itself, seat four in complete comfort, and has interactive touch screens all the way around the cabin? It is the Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept shown this week at the 2015 CES in Las Vegas, NV. Actually, Mercedes calls this car a “research vehicle” as many before it. Various technologies and ideas from these research cars make their way to production cars.

The F 015 is a physically large autonomous vehicle (larger than a current S-Class). The body structure is a cocoon of safety and technology. It uses carbon fiber reinforced plastics, aluminum, and high strength steels for a light-weight and structurally sound package.

mercedes, f 015, interior, lounge, future

The four doors open “suicide” style and can operate independently of each other. The four luxurious chairs swivel to create an upscale lounge or a mobile meeting room. Mercedes thinks that the car of the future will transform from a method of transportation and into a mobile living space. The interior door panels, dash, and the table are all touch screens with gesture controls and eye tracking.

Still, it’s interesting that the F 015 offers a small steering wheel and two pedals up front. Could it be that a human can actually operate this car in an emergency or when the mood is right? If so, how does it drive? Outward visibility is poor, but the giant dashboard mounted screen and windshield projection can help the driver see their surroundings. Mercedes did not specify the power train, but mentioned that the chassis is strong enough to hold a fuel-cell unit.

Mercedes even created a “City of the Future 2030+” environment in which the F 015 could exist and offer its occupants not only a method of conveyance, but also provide additional time and space in which to get away from the urban life.

The F 015 is also able to visually communicate with the outsize world via messages spelled out in its front or rear LED light arrays, or by projecting images on the road surface via lasers. For example, the car is courteous enough to project a virtual crosswalk on the road as it stops to let a pedestrian cross in front. This may be over-thinking it a bit, but still is a cool idea.

The Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion

Do you remember a 1993 Sylvester Stallone movie “Demolition Man”? It took place in 2032 and police cars they used had a similar shape and autonomous function to that of the F 015.

2016 Lexus GS F

What do you get when you stretch the 2015 Lexus RC F and give it four doors? It is this 2016 Lexus GS F. You get the same tantalizing naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 with 467 horsepower @ 7,100 rpm and 389 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm. This is a highly advanced motor that utilizes both Otto and Atkinson combustion cycles to maximize power and efficiency depending on the need. The quick-shifting 8-speed automatic is here as well.

The RC F is a smooth and powerful grand touring coupe that will growl when asked. You can expect much of the same with the GS F sedan, except you can also bring two or three more people along.

LEX-GSF-MY16-0011

Company’s new Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD) is also here. The TVD features three operating modes:

  • Standard (default) – provides a balance of agility and firmness
  • Slalom – emphasizes steering response
  • Track – emphasizes control during high-speed circuit driving

Lexus has not yet announced availability, fuel economy, or price. However, we know that the GS F is using a 112.2 inch wheelbase and weighs 4,034 pounds. This is only 76 pounds more than the RC F coupe.

Check out this TFLcar – Brand Spankin New video review of the 2015 Lexus RC F on the race track. TFLcar will be at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, so stay tuned for more information on the GS F and many other vehicles.

Chevy Camaro Is the Best Selling Pony Car in 2014 [Sales Report]

recall camaro
Chevy Camaro Z28

Chevy Camaro is the best selling pony car in 2014. It sold 6,628 coupes and convertibles in December 2014, which represented a 32.2% improvement over December of 2013. Don’t discount the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger.

The 2015 Mustang is all new and represents a shift towards independent rear suspension. It’s also the first to introduce a modern turbocharged four-cylinder engine into the segment. The Mustang outsold the Camaro by a big margin in December. It sold 9,511 cars, which is a 66.1% improvement over December of 2013. The Mustang can catch and overtake the Camaro quickly, if this trend continues. Interestingly, both grew at the same rate in 2014 (7.1%).

The refreshed 2015 Dodge Challenger sold 4,938 coupes in December and grew the most in December at 72.0%.  The Challenger still does not offer a convertible, and it has a fairly large gap to catch the other two. Still, the Challenger will likely have a successful 2015.

Which Is the Best Selling Compact Sedan in 2014? [Sales Results]

2014 toyota corolla sport review
2015 Toyota Corolla

Everything is not as rosy in the compact sedan segment. While pickup trucks and crossovers are selling red hot, the smaller sedans do not show the wild sales growth. Yes, the leading Toyota Corolla grew an impressive 12.3%, Chevy Cruze grew by 10.0%, and the Nissan Sentra smashed last year’s results by 41.9%. Many other big players declined. Honda Civic shrank a little and missed the number one position by just over 13,000 units. Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus saw event bigger declines. It will be interesting to see if the refreshed Focus can turn the momentum and overtake the Elantra for fourth this year.

The Volkswagen Jetta, Mazda3, and Dodge Dart were sold approximately the same number as the prior year.

Which Is the Best Selling Compact Crossover in 2014? [Sales Results]

2015, honda, cr-v
2015 Honda CR-V

There is no denying that the crossover segment is red hot. Most of the entries in this list had double-digit growth year-over-year. Honda CR-V is once again the top selling small crossover. It has a comfortable lead over the Ford Escape in second, which itself has an even bigger gap to the Toyota RAV4 in third. Chevy Equinox and Nissan Rogue round out the top five. It’s refreshing to have two American brands in the top five.

Jeep Cherokee came out of nowhere to snag the sixth sales spot for the year. It has a chance to break into the top five this calendar year. Subaru Forester also had an outstanding year, but the best improved small crossover was the Subaru XV Crosstrek. Mazda CX-5 nearly cracked 100,000 units for the year with another great result.

We will have to divide this table further this year as new sub-compact crossovers enter the market: Chevy Trax, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, and Mazda CX-3.

Which Is the Best Selling Midsize Sedan in 2014? [Sales Results]

2015, toyota, camry, xse, front, grille, face
2015 Toyota Camry

It’s not much of a surprise that the Toyota Camry was best selling mid-size sedan in United States in 2014. It was interesting to watch the Honda Accord gain ground throughout the year, however it’s still over 40,000 units behind. Nissan Altima had a solid year, and a solid third place. Ford Fusion improved and sold more than 300,000 cars in a year for the first time.

There is a sizable gap down to fifth place, which is occupied by a successful Hyundai Sonata that grew 6.5% over previous year. Chrysler 200 is having a resurgence with over 16,000 sedans sold in December. It could actually challenge the Kia Optima for seventh spot this calendar year.

Still, the most improved sedan is 2014 sales were at the bottom of this list. The best improvement came from the 2015 Subaru Legacy at 23.6%, which is in last place. Mazda6 had a great year with a 22.0% improvement.

How Far Will the 2015 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Go in EV Mode? [Video]

2015 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

TFLcar does the research, so that you don’t have to. In this case, we tricked Nathan Adlen into driving the 2015 Toyota Highlander Hybrid around the 1-mile test track in EV-only mode. Actually (it was no trick) Nathan graciously agreed to do it, until he realized that EV-only mode requires that you keep your speed under 25 MPH.

In order to get the most out it, you need to hit the “EV Mode” button, and gently accelerate. Monitor the power gauge on the left and make sure the needle stays to left of the green “ECO” line. If you ask for too much throttle, the car will bring the V6 engine on to provide more power.

2014_toyota_highlander_hybrid_buttons

The Highlander Hybrid is not a plug-in, so you cannot top off the batteries with juice from an outside source. We babied it on the way to track and tried to get as much charge into the battery as possible. Going down the hill and gently braking puts the energy back in. We got the battery nearly full of charge.

2014_toyota_highlander_hybrod_gauges

Nathan set off around our approximately 1-mile long test track in perfect isolation. No radio, no air conditioning, just the Highlander quietly swooshing away in all electric mode.

Watch to find out how far Toyota’s largest Hybrid go on electricity alone.
