2016 Infiniti Q70L AWD Test Drive: Inspired Design and Performance [Review]

2016 Infiniti Q70 Premium Select Edition

Infiniti’s flagship 5-passenger sedan has once again upped the ante in the mid-luxury sedan class with the Infiniti Q70L AWD. Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury division focus for the 2016 model year lineup included: penning a sleeker, more expressive exterior design without sacrificing interior roominess, while enhancing the luxury quotient with elevated levels of hand-craftsmanship; providing a healthy power output along with impressive fuel economy while delivering improved ride and handling qualities; and providing “Safety Shield” features that aid in reducing driving stress factors.

The design was skillfully blended with existing styling cues to maintain the brand heritage and DNA displayed by the 2015 refresh. The form is slippery in terms of aerodynamics from the low-mounted horizontal grille flanked by Infiniti’s signature hood cut lines and headlamp shapes that flow into the pronounced, high front fender wells and strong shoulder character line. A definitive rocker cut-line pulls the entire car’s form into a lower, more sinister stance, displaying genuine rear-wheel drive proportions with its long hood and short deck.

2016 Infiniti Q70 Premium Select Edition

From the front, a strong body line rises from the grille, flowing through the bodyside like a wave and blending into the shape of the rear LED combination lights, forming a compelling profile that highlights the Q70L’s sporty stance. At the rear, the design of the taillights creates a horizontal flow in motion while the high-quality lighting signature evokes a fresh and classy image.

The Infiniti Q70L elevates the luxury level with an extended wheelbase that is nearly 5.9-inches longer than the standard Q70, providing increased flexibility and roominess. This equates to the rear legroom of an SUV in a performance luxury sedan. The improved proportions allow the Q70L to deliver a class-leading interior and cargo volume while providing personal lamps, a power outlet, heated seats and rear door cinchers in the spacious rear passenger area.

]The well-appointed interior reflects the exterior’s sensuous lines of the Infiniti Q70L’s combination of style and spaciousness.] With 110.6 cubic feet of interior room (versus 103.6 cubic feet for the standard Q70), the Q70L stretches the expectations for comfort in class – including the ability of most rear seat passengers to cross their legs.

As with the standard wheelbase Q70, the instrument panel features Fine Vision gauges, gear-like rings on the instrument cluster meters, a 7-inch color vehicle information display, and Infiniti analog clock. Leatherette, heated 10-way power driver and front passenger’s seats, with 2-way power lumbar support, are standard – along with a dual occupant memory system for the driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors that can be linked to the individual Infiniti Intelligent Key fobs.

Power for the Q70 and Q70L is delivered by either an advanced 3.7 liter, DOHC, 24-valve V6 engine with sequential multi-port fuel injection that puts out 330 horsepower at 7,000 rpm along with 270 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm; or a 5.6-liter DOHC, 32-valve V8 engine with sequential multi-port direct injection gasoline, which generates 420 horses and 417 pound-feet of torque at 6,000 rpm.

The transmission for both engines is an electronically controlled 7-speed automatic with Adaptive Shift Control. A driver-adaptive learning algorithm senses driving style and adjusts automatic shifting accordingly. Manual- shift mode offers sequentially selectable manual gearshifts and downshift rev matching. Infiniti Drive Mode Selector allows the driver to choose from Standard, Sport, Snow or Eco modes and controls throttle responses, transmission shift points, and hill-start assist. Both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available.

Available advanced technologies include Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Around View® Monitor with Moving Object Detection, Backup Collision Intervention, and Forward Emergency Braking.
Also offered are an advanced Infiniti Navigation System, Bose® Studio Surround® premium audio system, Blind Spot Warning, Blind Spot Intervention, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention systems, Enhanced Intelligent Key, Intelligent Cruise Control, Distance Control Assist and Front Pre-Crash Seat Belts.

My test Infiniti Q70L was finished outside in Hermosa Blue metallic and inside in a Java and Charcoal theme with the Silver infused wood trim accents. The base price was set at $67,050 while options, which included The Deluxe Technology Package, Illuminated Kick Plates, Performance Tire and Wheel Package, along with the Destination Charge increased the final sticker to $76,770.

SUMMARY: The 2016 Infiniti Q70L is an exquisite luxury sedan. It’s not inexpensive, but it certainly comes across as an excellent value given the features and equipment content.

Infiniti Q70L Bespoke Edition

In keeping with driver focus, the Q70L features technologies that enable individuals to customize the driving feel. The Infiniti Drive Mode Selector allows drivers to select from four driving modes – Standard, Eco, Sport or Snow – and the integrated control system adjusts throttle sensitivity and transmission mapping helping to optimize performance. The system also adjusts Active Trace Control and Eco Pedal settings (available with Technology Package).

To encourage eco-driving behavior, the available Eco Pedal provides feedback directly through the accelerator by giving a slight pushback if driving inefficiently.
The Q70L utilizes the advanced Infiniti Front Mid-ship (FM) platform, which positions the engine behind the front axle, which results in optimizing front-to-rear weight balance. Laser welding is carried out at critical locations to help enhance lateral bending stiffness, torsional stiffness and suspension mounting point stiffness.

2016 infiniti q70

The handling characteristics are precise and sporty, provided by an independent double-wishbone design at the front and multi-link independent suspension in the rear, along with front and rear stabilizer bars. The ride quality is both quiet and comfortable.

Bottom line, the Infiniti team has successfully achieved the goals that they ambitiously set. The Q70 in any of its forms represents a rewarding, safe and secure performance-oriented luxury sedan to pilot in virtually any driving scenario, but the Q70L is the most luxurious – particularly with the increased comfort for rear passengers.

Honda Civic Takes April Sales Crown, Leads Compact Car Sales Over Corolla [Sales Report]

2016 Honda Civic Sedan
2016 Honda Civic Sedan

The new-from-the-ground-up Honda Civic continued its hot sales streak as it kept the compact car sales lead and beat out the Toyota Camry as April’s top seller.

More than 35,000 Civics found homes in April — 3,000 more than the Toyota Corolla and 1,000 more than the Camry, 2015’s sales champion. Civic sales were up 24.5 percent for the month and 28.9 for the year.

While the Camry still has a healthy lead for the year, the Civic is now the second-best-selling car in the land and it’s not even a crossover.

The Corolla easily held onto second in the category despite sales dropping 1.4 percent for the month and 5.2 percent for the year. The compact car class has been a two-horse race all year long and chances are it won’t change much the rest of the year.

2016 Nissan Sentra
2016 Nissan Sentra

The Nissan Sentra sits in a lonely third place, far enough ahead of the rest of the pack as to not have any competition, but far enough away from the leaders that it would be hard to catch up. Compared to 2015, sales are up 12 percent for the month and more than 20 percent for the year.

The rest of the has a lot more negative numbers, as no less than nine contenders are in the red for the month and the year. The Dodge Dart took the biggest loser crown for the month and tied with the Chevrolet Cruze for the year, although they had some competition from the Hyundai Elantra and Mitsubishi Lancer.

On a positive note, the Kia Forte had the most improved month followed by the Mazda 3, and the Forte is right behind the Civic for most improved for the year.

Old vs New Drag Race: A 2016 VW Golf GTI Takes on a 1999 Porsche 911 Over the Quarter Mile?

2016 vw golf gti vs 1999 porsche 911 drag race

Have you ever wondered just how much time and technology has improved the breed over a couple of decades? In other words, how much more automotive performance can you buy today versus 20 years ago?

Andre and I decided to find out so we lined up two cars toe to toe at the drag strip to see which one is faster.

In one corner is the returning champ…a 1999 Porsche 996 that you may also know as the Porsche 911 Carrera. The 996 was the first of the modern water-cooled Porsche 911s. When our test car was new it cost just over $70,000 and it came equipped with a 3.4L flat-6 normally aspirated engine producing 296 horsepower.

andre smirnov and roman mica

In the other corner is the modern challenger: a 2016 VW Golf GTI that’s powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that produces 210 horsepower and 258 lb-ft torque.

Both cars are German. Both cars are equipped with 6-speed manual transmissions, but that’s about where the similarities end. The 911 is rear-engined and rear-wheel drive while the GTI’s front wheels power and propel the car. That’s a drag strip advantage for the Porsche as the 911 hooks up much easier and can blast off the line without wheel spin. However, the GTI is turbocharged and at about one mile above sea level, the forced induction helps make up for high altitude power loss.

So which car is faster down the drag strip: the new GTI or the now classic 996? We’re still editing the video but I’m going to give you a hint to the results. Take a close look at the picture below and if you do a bit of deduction you can figure out which car ran the faster time.

ET time slip

But this first run does not tell the entire story because on the second run Andre and I switched cars and did it all over again. The results are interesting and informative.

We’ll publish the results and the video this Saturday as part of our ongoing Project Porsche Video Series. In the meantime check out this video from the same series where we find out which classic Porsche is the fastest around a race track and in an all out drag race:

Camry Keeps Midsize Sedan Sales Lead but Loses Overall Crown [Sales Report]

The 2016 Toyota Camry Special Edition
The 2016 Toyota Camry Special Edition

The Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car in the United States for a long time, so it’s a surprise that, although it kept the midsize sedan sales lead in April, it lost the overall monthly sales crown.

And it wasn’t lost to a crossover.

The Camry held a commanding lead over the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima in March, but sales were down eight percent for the month compared to March 2015 and overall sales are down more than three percent for the year.

This slip opened the door for the hot-selling Honda Civic, which was the best selling passenger car in the land for the month. Check out the compact car sales list for complete details.

The Camry still has the overall yearly lead with an 8,000-sale lead over the Civic.

Despite falling short of the lead, both the Accord and Altima had strong sales months. The Accord was up more than 15 percent for the month and more than 13 percent for the year, while the Altima was up nearly 29 percent for the month and more than four percent for the year.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu
2016 Chevrolet Malibu

The all-new Chevrolet Malibu continues to surge in sales over its predecessor, with a near-25 percent gain for March, the second-best increase after the Altima. Yearly sales are up 34 percent, the best of the group.

After the Malibu, though, the sales numbers get bleak. All contenders save for the Subaru Legacy had double-digit decreases for the month, and only the Legacy, the Hyundai Sonata and the Buick Regal are up for the year. Of all the cars on the list, the Chrysler 200 fared the worst, with monthly and yearly drops in the 60 percent range.

2018 Chevrolet Traverse Prototype Spied in the Wild [Video]

While prototype hunting in the high country, Roman spies several cars and SUVs undergoing high altitude testing. Is this the next generation 2018 Chevrolet Traverse being tested in the thin air of the Colorado Rockies?

The Chevrolet Traverse is a 3-row, 8-passenger crossover SUV and one of GM’s biggest family haulers. The standard engine is a 281 horsepower V-6 that drives the front or all four wheels through a six-speed automatic. Originally introduced in 2009, the 2013 model year was the last year it received any significant updates to the exterior and interior.

For 2016, the Traverse picked up some new technology like OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with Wi-Fi hotspot. Other new features include Leather and Driver Confidence packages for the LT trims and 20-inch aluminum wheel designs with machined and painted finishes.

It’s been reported that the next generation Traverse will ride on the same platform as the GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5. The current Traverse is front-wheel drive and available with all-wheel drive and it is probably a safe guess that the new Traverse will be the same. The Acadia has an optional 310 horsepower V6 and would be a perfect powerplant for the bigger and visibly longer SUV sibling.

If everything goes according to plan, we expect the second-generation 2018 Chevy Traverse to debut at next year’s Detroit auto show.

New VW Golf GTI Clubsport S Breaks Nürburgring Lap Record [News]

VW Golf GTI Clubsport S sets new Nurburgring lap record

Boasting 305 horsepower, the Golf GTI Clubsport S is Volkswagen’s most powerful version of the GTI straight from the factory. With German race car driver, Benny Leuchter at the wheel, the hot hatch from Wolfsburg broke the existing Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record for front-wheel drive production cars with a time of 7 minutes, 49.21 seconds. A lap time fast enough to make the top 100 list and more than 2 seconds faster than a BMW M4.

The Clubsport S is a special edition model of the Clubsport and limited to a production of only 400 examples that will be delivered worldwide. The specially tuned 2.0-liter TSI engine will dash from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 162 mph. Curb weight has been reduced to 2,833 pounds. Increasing the car’s agility is a configurable Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) and a driving profile selector.

Weight savings were accomplished largely by eliminating the rear seats, noise dampening insulation, variable-height trunk floor, the rear parcel shelf, and floor mats. Additional pounds were shed by using an aluminum subframe for the front suspension and the use of aluminum brake covers.

Subtle changes to the body are new front bumpers, unique to the Clubsport and Clubsport S, that allow more airflow to the engine and improve front aerodynamics and downforce. The roof-edge spoiler — shaped by wind tunnel testing — is significantly larger and applies additional rear downforce. In conjunction with a rear diffuser, this two-part rear wing generates more downforce on the rear axle than on the front axle. Thereby eliminating understeer that is typical of front-wheel-drive cars.

VW Golf GTI Clubsport S sets new Nurburgring lap record

The driver and the front seat passenger sit in racing bucket seats that provide a high degree of lateral support. Other distinctive features include the iconic golf ball shifter knob with Alcantara trim, a red line in the safety belts, “Honeycomb 40” design decals on the dashboard and doors, and elegant Piano Black accents. The extremely grippy Alcantara-trimmed sport steering wheel, which has a chrome GTI emblem, red stitching and the 12-o’clock position marked out, was designed to be ergonomically perfect for the track.

In this TFLcar performance review, a 2016 VW Golf GTI is tested against a Mk6 GTI before and after applying a Stage 1 Cobb Tuning flash upgrade.

Chrysler Pacifica Could Be First Self-Driving Minivan [News]

2017 Chrysler Pacifica

According to a Bloomberg report, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles North America (FCA) and Google may soon start their first phase of development to create autonomous vehicles using the Chrysler Pacifica as a self-driving prototype.

An agreement between the search engine giant and international automaker could be signed as early as today. Google and FCA decline to comment until a formal agreement is in place. Sources close to the matter mentioned that FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne has been directly involved in discussions with Google.

At the North American International Auto Show, Marchionne confirmed the company had “continuing conversations going on in Silicon Valley” when asked about Google and Apple. Google has stated multiple times it does not want to become a car manufacturer, making a deal with an existing automaker fundamental.

Currently, Google’s self-driving fleet includes several RX 450h crossovers, Toyota Priuses, and tiny two-seater cars designed in-house. The Pacifica would be the company’s largest self-driving vehicle and able to seat up to seven passengers.

FCA plans to install Google’s autonomous driving system starting this year, according to the same report by Bloomberg. This would mark Google’s first deal with a major automaker since it began developing self-driving cars in 2014. The deal benefits Fiat Chrysler with a means of getting a jumpstart the fast-developing technology of autonomous driving.

Spied: New Geo Metro Diesel High Altitude Testing in Colorado

geo metro diesel

Recently, TFL’s Technical Editor Brian Waring spotted this obvious GM prototype highway and high altitude testing on I-25 near Castle Rock, Colorado.

While much of the car is undisguised, keen-eyed observers will note that it bears a strong resemblance to the previous generation GEO Metro. The Metro was known for being one of the most fuel-efficient subcompact cars on the market. It was a joint venture between GM and Suzuki. By closely studying this spy photo we’re guessing that GM intends to make the next generation of Geo Metro that’s even more fuel efficient with the addition of a diesel engine.

20160430_104944

And while this prototype is missing a hood. We expect the next generation of the Geo Metro to be fully EPA diesel complaint as you can see by the serious consideration given to cleaning up diesel emission with a cat back exhaust.

Please let us know what you think of this latest TFL prototype in the comments below.
