GM Recalls and Issues Stop-Sale for Failing 6.2L V8s in Its 2021-2024 Full-Size SUVs and Trucks

Following a NHTSA investigation and lawsuits surrounding its L87 6.2-liter V8 engine, GM is launching a large-scale recall of popular trucks and SUVs.

A new safety recall and stop-sale campaign homes in on a problem owners have extensively been complaining about: the 6.2-liter V8 engine suffering consistent problems (including engine failures). Specifically, General Motors’ campaign (N252494001) covers 2021-2024 model years of its half-ton trucks — the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra — and its full-size SUVs, including the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, the GMC Yukon/Yukon XL and the Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV. The engine in these vehicles could have an inherent defect that can lead to a loss of power, engine damage or even catastrophic failure.

In a statement, GM said of the issue (as reported by GM Authority), “GM will voluntarily recall certain [full-size SUV and truck models] equipped with the 6.2L L87 engines to resolve manufacturing issues affecting some engines. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible.”

GM notes in a recall document sent to dealers that the connecting rod and/or crankshaft components could have production defects. It does not elaborate on the exact nature of those defects, but it goes on to acknowledge the increased risk of a crash should the engine fail while vehicles are operating.

This recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigating the problem earlier this year, noting engine failures could impact as many as 877,710 vehicles. As of early January, 39 owners filed complaints, and that number has only increased since then. Several owners have also filed lawsuits against GM due to the critical engine failure. One lawsuit filed by an Illinois resident who owns a 2023 GMC Yukon Denali is seeking $5 million in damages*. That owner’s vehicle came equipped with the L87 V8 engine, and while he did receive a replacement engine free of charge after the original unit failed, the complaint contends the replacement engine suffers from the exact same defect.

The automaker’s solution may hint at a contributing factor to engine failures, if not the cause

GM’s repair bulletin tells dealers to perform remedial work on vehicles already in their inventories. Under federal law, dealers cannot sell or deliver vehicles under a safety recall to customers until repair work has been completed.

As for what the automaker is telling technicians to do, the first step will be to inspect 6.2-liter V8 engines for manufacturing defects. If it passes that inspection, then dealer technicians will install a new oil filter and change the engine oil to a thicker viscosity. Instead of 0W-20 that the owner’s manual originally recommended, engines fixed under this recall will get 8 quarts 0W-40 full synthetic oil instead. The underlying difference is that, at higher temperatures, the new oil will maintain a thicker consistency over the thinner 20-weight oil, hopefully providing adequate lubrication and better protection for the crankshaft and connecting rods.

It’s unclear whether thinner engine oil may have exacerbated engine failures (again, GM doesn’t go into detail on the nature of the defect), even if that isn’t a direct cause. The automaker’s latest documentation also doesn’t specifically mention how many units are affected, so we cannot say with certainty whether it’s the same 877,000-plus vehicles under the NHTSA’s investigation or a smaller or larger pool.

In addition to the stop-sale, GM will notify owners of the problem and to visit their local dealers for repairs.

This specific issue does not impact GM’s L84 5.3-liter V8, the L3B 2.7-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, or the 3.0-liter LM2 Duramax turbo-diesel (nor its updated equivalent, the LZ0). 2025-model-year trucks and SUVs are reportedly built with updated tooling, which eliminates the manufacturing defect, so those models also shouldn’t be affected (and aren’t included in this recall).

Nissan Drops Its Plans For Electric Maxima, Altima Models In Favor of New US-Built SUV

In light of America’s current sedan market and low potential for profits, Nissan is abandoning its plans to build two electric sedans here — and will build an SUV instead.

This week, as it rolled out new electric and plug-in hybrid concepts at the Shanghai Auto Show, Nissan scrapped its ambitions to manufacture sedans in the United States (ostensibly EV replacements for the Maxima and Altima). Instead, the automaker will build an as-yet-unnamed SUV at its Canton, Mississippi plant, according to reporting by Automotive News.

“Nissan is committed to delivering the right product, at the right time, in the right place, and at the right price,” the company said in a statement. Nissan’s chairman for the Americas Christian Meunier acknowledged the market landscape doesn’t make sense for the brand to bring two electric sedans to the market — at least not if it wants to profit on those vehicles. The sedan market, on the whole, has shrunk over the years as players in the U.S. market pivot toward larger, more expensive and more profitable SUVs. The cost to develop these vehicles, the company contends, would be too high to sell it at a price that makes sense for the mainstream brand.

The company is still going to sell electric sedans, including those co-developed with Chinese automaker Dongfeng, but not for the North American customer.

So, the company will reportedly pivot toward that SUV instead. AN notes the vehicle, codenamed PZ1K, is the same boxy, Xterra-like SUV it showed off in Japan last month, alongside the new Leaf, Rogue and Pathfinder. This new all-electric, U.S.-built SUV will supposedly start production in January 2028.

With this recent shift, we’re also supposed to get an electric Infiniti SUV that will also come from the Canton plant, though it appears from a Nissan memo that such a vehicle (codenamed PZ1J) won’t arrive until that May 2028, some four months behind the Nissan EV.

Another electric SUV, the one that will effectively replace the company’s earlier planned sedans, is a complete mystery at this point. There’s no readily available information on when it will go into production, what it will be called or what price point Nissan’s targeting with that model.

In light of Nissan’s recent troubles and new CEO Ivan Espinosa taking over this month, the automaker seems to be taking some decisive actions to improve its outlook moving forward. However, there’s still quite a bit of work to do on that front, as Nissan recorded a 700 billion to 750 billion yen ($4.9-5.3 billion) loss for this past fiscal year, a record amount. Right now, Japan’s third-largest automaker (behind Toyota and Honda) is closing some plants, reducing manufacturing capacity and cutting jobs to stem those massive losses so it can bring these new models to market in the next 2-3 years.

2026 Porsche 911 Spirit 70 Celebrates the Funkiest Decade With Appropriate Throwback Styling

The 1970s were a defining decade for music, fashion, and the Porsche 911.

Break out your bellbottoms and dust off your platform shoes, because the ’70s are back, baby! At least, that’s the idea with this throwback model of the iconic Porsche 911: the Spirit 70. It’s the latest in a run of modern 911s based around pivotal points in Porsche’s history, right down to the special Olive Neo paint and decade-appropriate fabric seats. Just like the old-school Porsche 930 — the original 911 Turbo — this 2026 recreation is based on the turbo-flat-six setup of the modern Carrera GTS cabriolet.

The 2026 Porsche 911 Spirit 70 may not have shag carpet, but it does bring plenty of classic-themed touches with the aforementioned pant, the retro “70” decal on the doors and the 911 motif on the front, as well as the staggered five-spoke wheels (20 inches in the front and 21s in the rear). Both the top and windshield frame are black, in order to draw your eyes to those old-school touches.

Inside, you get what’s arguably the best part of the whole package, with the “Pasha” seat pattern. that pattern continues on the instrument panel and the door cards. Apart from the pattern and the gold-plated badges, the rest of the Spirit 70’s interior is the same as your typical Carrera GTS. That said, one other small touch is the white needles and green digits on the Sport Chrono watch atop the dashboard.

Mounted in the back of the 911 Spirit 70 is the same powerplant you’ll find in the latest Carrera GTS. The 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six engine gets Porsche’s “eTurbo” and hybrid system, taking the power output up to 532 horsepower and 449 lb-ft of torque. In keeping with that old-school homage, this special edition sticks with rear-wheel drive. Unlike the 911s of yesteryear, though, there’s a lot more modern technology at play here to make that level of power manageable, rather than potentially putting you into an early grave when you push things a little too hard.

So, how much is it?

If you’re interested in the modern-retro 911 Spirit 70, it’ll arrive later this summer. Porsche is limiting production to 1,500 units, so it’ll be exclusive, and it’ll also be expensive. While the standard Carrera GTS isn’t exactly cheap at $185,250 to start, this Spirit 70 special edition will set you back $242,250. That’s if the big “T” word doesn’t play a role, pushing the so-called MSRP even higher into the stratosphere (as ever, we’ll have to wait and see).

2026 Lexus ES Takes On Dramatic New Design and Gets An Electric Variant

Following the Camry’s redesign, it’s luxury counterpart gets an even more ambitious overhaul.

It may not sell gangbusters like the Toyota Camry, but the Lexus ES is still a core pillar of the luxury brand’s portfolio. Trouble is, it’s been more than six years since the current model went into production, so it’s desperately needed a major update. Fortunately it’s finally getting one, as Lexus revealed the 2026 model year ES at the Shanghai Auto Show Wednesday.

Like its mainstream sibling, the 2026 Lexus ES rides on Toyota’s GA-K platform and features the familiar 2.5-liter-backed hybrid powertrain, at least on the base trim. The major difference arriving with this eighth-generation model, however, is a couple of fully electric powertrains as Lexus expands EV offerings beyond the existing RZ crossover.

In its evolution, the 2026 Lexus ES range drops the more curvaceous styling of past Lexuses (Lex-ii?) for the edgier look of the RZ, and indeed the brand’s other recent revamps like the TX and RX SUVs. It loses its large spindle grille in the process, though the shape of the front end still tracks with what we’ve associated with Lexus models over the past several years. It’s just that now it’s more of a facade with contrasting trim elements and creases to signify the look, rather than actual grille trim (though the lower grille is still there for cooling). Other Lexus hallmarks like the check-mark running lights are still there, while the ES’ rear end adopts a much more aggressive look, including a thin LED taillight and full-width bar incorporating the “LEXUS” font in the light signature.

The hybrid ES gets a bit more oomph and will be available in FWD and AWD configurations

On the gas-hybrid side, the 2026 Lexus ES 350h replaces the 300h, while all gas-only models are gone (again, like the updated Toyota Camry). You still get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, though this time it’s paired with an integrated “eAxle” combining the power control unit and transaxle for a smaller and lighter package. You get a bit more power this time around, up to 244 horsepower from 215 in the last generation. It’s still focused toward efficiency over performance, mind you, so Lexus’ acceleration quotes aren’t blistering for either hybrid model: 0-60 comes up in just under 8 seconds with the front-wheel drive version, and a couple tenths of a second quicker than that if you get the all-wheel drive ES 350h.

If you’re able, ready and willing to leave internal combustion behind entirely, then there are two electric ES options available. The base version is the ES 350e. This model incorporates just one 221 horsepower electric motor driving the front wheels, for a 0-62 mph time of 8.9 seconds. The dual-motor, all-wheel drive ES 500e, on the other hand, manages 338 horsepower, bringing the 0-62 time down to 5.9 seconds. That’s better, though still not anywhere near blazingly fast, particularly in today’s EV landscape.

Lexus did not share battery capacity for either of its electric models. However, it did say to expect about 300 miles on a charge for the ES 350e, when equipped with 19-inch wheels. Other sedans in the same sort of size class use a battery capacity around 75-80 kWh to achieve that kind of range, though that’s purely spitballing as the efficiency of the electric motors, the battery chemistry, weight and quite a few other factors can impact the actual EPA estimates.

The 2026 Lexus ES gets a minimalistic interior

Stepping inside the new ES, the interior isn’t exactly what you’d call flamboyant, though there are a few nice touches such as the bamboo-themed 3D-printed door trim with underlying ambient lighting. Naturally, you also get a larger 14-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Mark Levinson premium sound system, and an updated, more responsive voice assistant. Lexus also incorporated navigation and map functionality into the gauge cluster, so you don’t have to glance over at the main screen for directions.

As part of its tech overhaul, the new ES brings in Lexus Safety System+ 4.0, which iterates on the wide range of driver assistance features we see in the current systems. Lexus didn’t elaborate on exactly what changes are coming to 4.0 over the 3.5 version, apart from saying it “will have updates to its hardware and detection capabilities”, and that we’d get more details closer to launch.

Overall, the 2026 Lexus ES lineup is 6.5 inches longer than before, riding on a 3-inch longer wheelbase. So, this generation will be a bit roomier than before, while the automaker says its raised the seats to make entry and exit easier and improve sight lines. From personal experience that’s a welcome change, because getting into the old ES more or less meant falling into the seats.

Speaking of those seats, Lexus is offering an “Executive Package” on North American ES models for the first time, provided you go for the Luxury trim. That includes reclining rear seats with a passenger-side ottoman, rear outboard massaging seats and heating/ventilating functions for the rear passengers as well.

Pricing information for the 2026 Lexus ES lineup isn’t available yet, and it’s a bit difficult to guess considering the entire lineup is pretty much moving a notch upmarket. The old ES 250 and ES 350 models are out, as is the ES 300h, so pricing for the 2026 ES 350h will probably land closer to the $50,000 mark. We’ll almost certainly see the EVs land at higher price points still, as rivals like the BMW i5 and Audi A6 e-tron both start in the upper-$60,000s.

The eighth-generation 2026 Lexus ES will officially go on sale next year.

2025 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

The long-awaited—and long-sought-after—Z06 C8 Corvette has arrived, and Ronald McDonald House Central Valley has one. The Z06 tunes its 5.5-liter V8 to 670 horsepower, up 175 hp from the ‘regular’ C8. 1965 Pontiac GTO

The GTO was born out of the hot rod culture of the early 1960s, when Pontiac engineers decided to drop a 389 V8 from the full-size Bonneville into the midsize Tempest. Cadillac Teases Optiq-V Model As the Brand Rounds Out Its High-Performance Lineup

The Optiq-V will join Cadillac’s lineup as the fifth model in the current V-Series, and the second performance EV.

Hot on the heels of Cadillac debuting the hot Lyriq-V crossover, we’re getting an encore with its smaller sibling. Later this summer, the Optiq-V will add a spicier trim to the brand’s new entry-level electric model.

Beyond a couple teaser images, Cadillac remains mum on any sort of technical details for the Optiq-V, but the fundamental brief is clear given that V-Series. It’s going to be a more potent version of the company’s small electric SUV, which already puts out 300 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque in its existing trims. There’s some room for Cadillac to push there, though it’s emphasizing agility and a taut sort of driving experience over out-and-out power.

In fact, the automaker says of the Optiq-V: “Building on Optiq’s agile drive, Cadillac engineers delivered a unique package prioritizing precision, dynamic suspension and tight steering for an exhilarating driving experience.” What exactly does that mean? That sort of statement is more or less on-point for what it said of the hotter Lyriq, though we don’t know what the actual numbers are just yet. We’ll have to wait for the full reveal in a few months’ time. Same goes for price: It will land on the upper end of the Optiq’s price spectrum naturally, so you can reasonably expect a figure around $70,000. The 615 horsepower Lyriq V’s price point comes in at $80,090, for reference.

Mercedes-Benz Pulls Out the Swankiest Stops With the Vision V Luxury Van Concept

Mercedes-Benz is aiming to build a luxury minivan next year, and this is a look at a new level of fanciness.

More than four decades ago, automakers dreamed up the minivan as a prominently practical concept. It wasn’t exactly what you’d call cool, though you might want to reconsider your prejudices with the crop of new van concepts and production models. To wit, Mercedes has this new Vision V concept — underpinned by the company’s new VAN.EA platform that will go into full production next year — as an ambitious idea of what a luxurious minivan could be…rather than just your stereotypical family machine.

The idea behind the glitzy and glamorous Vision V is, essentially, to redefine the modern limousine. SUVs are cliche these days, after all, and while sedans have faithfully served the limo role for decades, they don’t make the most practical use of space. Here, this electric van concept brings tons of room behind the massive faux grille up font and thin light bar underlying the three-pointed star hood ornament (because we’re talking luxury, and that hood ornament shouts class).

Around the back, moving through the insanely large wheels (apropos of a concept) and prominent chrome brightwork, the Vision V gets a full, wraparound taillight unit that pretty much encompasses the entire rear end design. Will that make it to production? Almost certainly not. Does it look cool? Well, if you’re a nerdy type like me, you’ll probably say yes. It’s better than a Chevy Express or the now-departed Dodge Grand Caravan, isn’t it?

And then…there’s the interior.

Once you’re inside, “insane” hardly even begins to describe the Mercedes-Benz Vision V. Sure, we’ve seen plenty of lounge concepts in recent years, particularly as automakers thought about how electric powertrains change the packaging game, but the automaker is throwing pretty much everything at this luxury van to capture peoples’ imaginations.

The Vision V brings a ton of wood trim (naturally), as well as funkily styled Nappa leather-trimmed seats and white silk elements. Along the side walls, glass display cabinets are integrated into the trim, and passengers get a 42-speaker Dolby Atmos surround sound system — with four of those speakers mounted on pillars outset from the wall, like an actual home theater setup.

And speaking of the home theater setup, no lounge-on-wheels would be complete without a 65-inch retractable 4K display that rolls up out of the floor. You also get seven projectors hidden in the headliner and the floor to project images onto the side windows, which can be made opaque, so you get a 360-degree viewing experience. And Mercedes included a game controller in one of the glass cabinets, so you’ve captured my inner nerd right there.

Up front, the Vision V is fairly typical Mercedes, funky leather seats notwithstanding. You still get a “Superscreen”, lest the rear passengers get all the display power here, as well as a host of crystal white leather.

Now, this being not just a concept but a particularly over-the-top concept, it’s unlikely most of the swankiest features would actually reach production. That said, Mercedes is on a mission to actually make a glamorous luxury minivan to shuttle celebrities as well as well-heeled families who want something different than your run-of-the-mill SUV. Right now, the closest we have to that in this country is the Volkswagen ID.Buzz (I also think that’s cool, but VW’s obviously going for more mainstream appeal).

How much will a Mercedes-Benz luxury van cost? At this point, we have no idea, although I wouldn’t be too surprised if it started well into six-figure territory.
