Ineos Introduces New ‘Fusilier’ Model Line with Two Electrified Powertrain Options

You'll be able to get it as a full battery electric model, or as a range-extended EV

Now that the Grenadier is reaching customers, it’s time to check out what’s next from the brand.

It may look surprisingly similar to Mercedes’ G-Class from some angles, but what you’re looking at here is, in fact, the upcoming Ineos Fusilier SUV. On Friday, the company made its third reveal after the larger Grenadier and the Quartermaster pickup, which made its debut during Goodwood last summer. When this new model makes its way onto the market, Ineos says it will come with two powertrain options: either a fully electric layout or with a gasoline range-extender. Crucially for some folks, however, it will not launch with a gasoline-only option, like the Grenadier has.

Naturally, the Ineos Fusilier also bears a strong resemblance to the Grenadier, and that’s no coincidence. Like the company’s other models, it developed the SUV with Magna (which also builds the G-Wagen, actually). While we don’t have full technical specs on the Fusilier yet, Ineos did say it would be “slightly smaller” than the Grenadier. We also don’t know to what extent Magna is involved with the electric powertrains, but the final product will ride on a “bespoke skateboard platform” with a steel top hat and underbody. The doors and closures, on the other hand, will be aluminum.

The automaker showed the Fusilier in several different color options on its website:

“As we developed this vehicle,” says Ineos chairman Jim Ratcliffe, “we quickly concluded that in order to move toward decarbonization but continue making cars that consumers want to drive, we need a mix of powertrain technologies. BEVs are perfect for certain uses: shorter trips and urban deliveries, but industries and governments need to have realistic expectations around other technologies that can help accelerate the necessary change of pace. That is the reason we are offering an additional powertrain for the Fusilier, one that dramatically reduces emissions but has the range and refueling capabilities needed.”

Again, at the present time we don’t know exactly what sort of engine Ineos has in mind for that range extender, the size of the battery with each version or what potential range figures will look like. We should have more information on all that in Fall 2024, when the company actually plans to reveal more on its upcoming SUV. We’ll also learn more about launch timings, which will almost certainly land in early to mid-2025 as a 2026 model, if not a bit later. Prior to its actual launch, Ineos and Magna will develop the Fusilier near the latter’s Graz, Austria production plant.
