The 2015 Kia Soul may not look much different than its outgoing model, and that is because not many updates were made after the full redesign in 2014. However, the Soul did receive some very important upgrades in structural rigidity of the front area of the vehicle. What does this mean? Well the new improvements have earned the 2015 Soul an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2014.

2105 kia soul crash test overviewThe Soul received a rating of “Good” in the categories of Small overlap front, Moderate overlap front, Side impact, Roof strength, as well as head restraints and seats. As far as roof strength, in order for a vehicle to receive a rating of “Good” it must be able to withstand a downward force on the roof of at least four times the weight of the vehicle before crushing the roof down five inches. The Kia Soul is able to experience pressures of 5.27 times its weight before the roof is crushed five inches, giving the vehicle a highly respected rating of “Good” in the roof strength test. The Soul has a curb weight of 2,905 lbs and the roof strength was rated at a peak force of 15,304 lbs.

The structural improvements the engineering team at Kia made to the Soul are subtle to the buyer but will really paid off for Kia in the crash test arena. From 2010 to 2013 the Kia Soul had received a rating of “Poor” in the front small overlap test. These bad test results surely effected the cars ability to obtain an overall test rating of “Good”, but with a few advances in the development of the frontal crash zones, the 2015 Kia Soul can proudly show off its 2014 IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
