And the 2011 European Car of the Year is the…

Score one one for the all electric Nissan Leaf.

Here in the States the Chevy Volt won the prestigious Car of the Year award just a few weeks ago, but across the big pond 58 journalist from 23 European countries named the Leaf the big winner.

“It is a great honor for Nissan LEAF to be recognized as the European Car of the Year – the first all-electric car to receive this distinction. Like previous Car of the Year winners, Nissan LEAF is an appealing, competitive car, with no compromise on style, features, safety, performance or handling. Yet it stands apart as an innovative car that reflects a clear vision of the future of transportation – a vision of sustainable mobility,” said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn after receiving the trophy.

Nissan says that 27,000 customers have pre-ordered the Leaf globally.

Which is good news for Nissan. Now if they could only build them fast enough for the current demand.
