Video: GM’s new advertising campaign in need of extreme makeover

Gm

This is not going to go over well.

What was GM thinking when it made this commercial?

Point One:

New GM Chairman (and admitted non-car guy) Ed Whitacre is way too old to be the pitchman for GM. In fact he looks like he's ready to retire. Does GM really want the new corporate image to be built around a dude with no car experience who looks like he's more comfortable in a boardroom of a New York equity firm instead of behind the wheel of a Chevy Camaro?

Point Two:

"May the best car win," as proudly proclaimed by Whitacre is just plain silly. The best cars and companies won. That's why GM and Chrysler went bankrupt and Ford didn't. Why remind the buyer of that fact when GM has hardly any new or innovative cars to sell today.

Point Three:

GM needs to let the cars do the talking. GM has declared Buick "the new class of world class." In China perhaps, but in this country a Buick is still the car your grandma in Florida buys to take the cat to the vet.

GM can give all the money back guarantees it wants but until the company starts building cars that consumers want, any advertising campaign is just so much window dressing on a brand (Buick) in desperate need of a extreme design and engineering makeover.
