This week, TFL got a surprise visit to Tumbleweed Ranch from Adam, a TFL viewer driving his brand-new Ineos Grenadier Trialmaster from Seattle to his home outside Washington, DC. With 2,000 miles on the truck, Adam shared his first impressions with Tommy and let him put the Grenadier on the rollers to see just how good its off-road technology really is.

Is the Grenadier a Better Land Rover Discovery 110?

Adam purchased the Grenadier for $86,000 because it was everything he wanted in the Land Rover 110 that he was in the process of restoring and upgrading. So why not get something brand-new from the factory with everything on his wish list?

Power for the 2024 Ineos Grenadier comes from a BMW-sourced, 3.0-liter turbocharged B58 inline-six with 282 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed ZF transmission routes power to the wheels through a full-time 4WD system.

After 2,000 miles over the Cascade Mountains through Idaho, down to Moab, Utah, and over the Colorado Rockies, Adam’s home runs — beyond the off-road capability of the SUV — are the commanding driving position with fantastic visibility. Among the misses, the side-view mirrors are small, the visibility through the rear doors is less than ideal, and the auto-stop/start function is not quite perfect yet. But otherwise, Adam calls it a dream to drive at 80-plus MPH on the Interstate, around town, and on the trail. One bummer, his windshield is already cracked from road debris.

TFL Slip Test Results

Grenadier TFL slip Test
Slip Test #1 – Front tires grounded.
INEOS Grenadier TFL Slip Test Diagonal
Slip Test #2 – Diagonal, front-left & rear-right tires grounded.
Grenadier TFL Slip Test right rear only
Slip Test #3 – Right-rear tire grounded only.

Tommy put the Grenadier through four tests: front-wheels grounded, rear-right and front-left wheels grounded, rear-right wheel grounded only, and front-right wheel grounded only. The SUV crushed all of them, even without lockers engaged or in 4-LO. Locking the center- and rear-diffs and putting the vehicle in 4-LO helped, but not as much as you’d think. This result speaks to how capable the traction-control system on the Grenadier is without all the off-road goodies activated.
