Patent drawings revealed the Dyson car’s planned shape.
New details have surfaced showing billionaire home appliance inventor Sir James Dyson’s take on an electric car. Recently published patent application shows the car’s overall shape, which takes on an overall crossover appearance. The Dyson electric car has a long wheelbase, unique-looking body and short front and rear overhangs.
Beyond the general shape, the patent drawings show this as a three-row crossover. Although, it has a more sedan-like front end. With a sharply-raked windshield, it looks fairly sporty when approaching it from the front. As you make it to the back however, the rear end suddenly drops off. Get below the tailgate, and the Dyson electric car has a blunt fascia, with the wheels just a few inches from the edge of the body.
In an interview with the Telegraph, Dyson told reporters the car would “contain fundamentally new technologies and make some inventive leaps.” Beyond that, he told his staff it was vital to protect the technology with patents.
The Dyson car was confirmed in 2017, with Aston Martin lead engineer Ian Minards taking up the project. He joined the company in 2016 as vice president of its automotive division. Dyson himself revealed plans to spend £2.5 billion ($3.2 billion) of his own money on the project. Autocar reported more details, like the car’s aluminum body, and will run on unusually thin tires with large wheels to lower rolling resistance. On the size front, it looks like it has a footprint similar to that of a Range Rover.
