Video: Is Nissan Going to Bring Back the Xterra?

Do you want to see Nissan's off-road-focused SUV make a comeback?

The Nissan Xterra disappeared from U.S. dealerships back in 2015.and there was never a replacement. Is this a clue to an all-new Nissan Xterra?

In the United States, a Nissan Xterra represented one of the most off-road capable vehicles in its class. From 1999 to 2015, the Xterra soldiered on through two generations, both of which were based on a modified Nissan Frontier platform. It never saw a direct replacement, though some recent rumblings have us wondering…will Nissan bring it back at some point? Then, there’s the natural follow-up question: Should they resurrect this off-road SUV?

Designed in California, the Nissan Xterra was immediately competitive with Jeep, Toyota and even Land Rover. Its design prioritized functionality, utility and rugged individuality. The Xterra was unique, in a time when automakers were softening off-roaders to make them more luxurious, (making them more appealing to a wider audience), Nissan went a different route. Nissan’s marketing for the Xterra was spot-on when it stated, “everything you need, nothing you don’t.”

Like Toyota’s 4Runner and FJ, it had a solid rear axle, and an independent front suspension. Its approach, brake over and departure angles were very competitive – even today. So was its power, utility, capability and price.

Does this hint at the next Nissan Xterra?

Based on U.S. patent 11,866,100 – some of the engineers at Nissan are looking at some extensive alterations to the Frontier, making a pass-through to the rear, and a retracting roof over the cab. In addition, the bed is covered in a topper with removeable components. It sure looks like a possible successor to the Xterra.

If nothing else, it could signal an exciting direction Nissan trucks may go.

We covered the patent over on TFLtruck.com, if you’re looking to delve into those details. Also, we’ve dipped our toes into the Xterra return rumors before, which you can check out in one of my past ‘Ask Nathan’ columns. Check out the video below and let us know what you think!
