The U.S. market never saw the last-generation Scirocco. In 2017, Volkswagen dropped the European model as well.
We currently live in a world without a Volkswagen Scirocco. In 2017, the German brand decided to drop it’s three-door, Golf-based sport hatchback, citing stagnating sales. The 2+2 coupe-esque hatchback styling may have been a dramatic departure from the rather more conservative Golf. However, that wasn’t quite enough to spur sales. So, 43 years after it first produced the Scirocco, VW decided to kill it off.
Volkswagen originally produced the Scirocco from 1974 to 1991. From the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, Volkswagen marketed its next sports coupe as the Corrado, including a hot VR6 version. When the company stopped producing the Corrado, it didn’t have a sports coupe model until it reintroduced the Mark 3 Scirocco back in 2008. We never saw the Mk3 in the U.S. market, but it was sold elsewhere, with varying degrees of success.
The Scirocco’s discontinuation leaves a gap in the market that Volkswagen has yet to fill with a successor. The last model was based on the Mark 5 Golf, and the company hasn’t expressed interest in bringing out a new model, now or when it unveils the next-generation Golf.
Mechanical engineer and automotive designer sketches a new Volkswagen Scirocco
Ah, but what if it looked like this? Spanish mechanical engineer and automotive designer Luis Carlos Moreno G. sketched an interpretation of the new Volkswagen Scirocco using the company’s current design language. Remnants of the previous Scirocco remain around the back. It’s a bit more agressive, while the front sports a grille and headlights resembling the new Arteon.
This design adds a few more modern flourishes, like the panoramic glass roof and seriously flared wheel arches. It is just a rendering however, as Volkswagen won’t likely breathe new life into the Scirocco. The market has shifted toward crossovers, and Volkswagen’s current strategy heavily leans on electrification. Would you want Volkswagen to make the Scirocco if it looked like this?
