It’s been a long time coming, but the newly minted VW Golf SportWagen will come to the United States with 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system as the 2017 VW Golf SportWagen Alltrack. The Alltrack is being revealed this week at the 2015 New York Auto Show.
The Alltrack will not go on sale until sometime in 2016 as a 2017 model. Volkswagen did not specify on sale dates or power specification, but it’s safe to assume that it will be approximately 12 months before this baby hits the dealer showrooms.
Volkswagen did specify that the Alltrack is using the latest Haldex-5 AWD system that lets the car operate in front-wheel-drive mode, but transfer up to 50% of the power to the rear when traction situation requires. The Electronic Differential Locks (EDL) are capable of shifting power from side to side.
Visually, the Alltrack looks meaner than your regular Golf SportWagen. It has “nearly one inch more of ground clearance” according to VW. Wider wheel arches and flares add to the rugged appearance. There are also updated bumper designs and an upscale interior.
What will power the Alltrack? Well, the press release does not mention this, but the images show the TDI version in European trim. The 2.0L TDI power is very possible for the production model in the US.
