The 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser is a classic off-road ride that’s a particular favorite of Toyota enthusiasts. It’s a cool looking and capable vehicle, but there was a problem with this generation in that it had a straight six under the hood. The old 4.5L six had good low-end torque (268 lb-ft @ 2,800 rpm), but did not have satisfactory higher-end power (190 hp @ 4,400 rpm).
This one is an exception thanks to the folks at Slee Offroad who gave this 80 series Land Cruiser an upgrade with a 4.7L V8, so it has a lot more power and torque. The engine and transmission transplant come from the 100 series Land Cruiser (1998-2007). The more recent Toyota V8 is rated at 265 hp @ 5,400 rpm and 310 lb-ft @ 3,400 rpm. It has more torque and a ton more higher end horsepower. This motor wakes up the Land Cruiser and gives it solid on highway performance, as well as continues with the off-road capability.
