What cars are hot and what cars are not

Prius
By now you've probably heard of deep discounts and screaming deals car deals from your local newspaper or television station.

But what cars are really selling and which ones are not so hot?

Peter West is a long time car buyer for AAA Colorado Auto Source. He considers himself a Automotive Therapist, but he's been helping people in Denver and Boulder buy cars for over a dozen  years.

"It's ironic but I don't think there is such a thing as a screaming deal" West said. "People are being more discerning. They are thinking it through more carefully," he added.

However West has seen a dramatic shift in the types of cars people are buying. Where consumers used to buy a car based on passion, today they make their purchasing decision based practicality.

"There a move toward quality," West said.

Consumers are looking more closely at brands such as Honda, Toyota and Subaru.

So what are the best car deals today?

West believes one of the current best deals is the Toyota Prius. It was just a few months ago that car seekers had to wait to get a Prius, but today you can pick a color and even get a discount on a new one.

"People have been lulled by the low price of gas," West added.

But he believes that the high fuel economy, practicality and reliability of the Prius will always be a good value in this struggling economy.

What are the new car deals to avoid?

West did not want to disparage any particular model but he did say that consumers should keep an eye out for reliability and gas mileage as an indicator of what cars are hot and what cars are not.

Finally, he also warned that manufactures are cutting back on production of many models so waiting for the screaming deal could be trouble. I've had clients who played the waiting game," he said "and it back fired on them."
