The Unwanted Wrangler: Why Now is the Time to Buy a Square Headlight Jeep Wrangler YJ

The Jeep Wrangler YJ: The Jeep enthusiasts love to hate, the Jeep your wallet will learn to love. This year the most hated Wrangler of the lineup is turning 30, and here’s why you need to buy one now! (Disclaimer: I owned the green 1995 Wrangler pictured and it was a fun and relatively trouble free year of off-road adventures)

Very few vehicles capture the go-anywhere do-anything American attitude like the humble Jeep. A product of second world war, the civilian jeep can be seen from beaches to mountain tops across the globe. Although it has gained a few pounds and features over last 75 years, the basic design has remained largely unchanged; open top, removable doors, 4-wheel drive and round headlights. Well, not quite.

For a period of 8 years, the classic design was changed, a difference that sent shock waves throughout the Jeep community: square headlights. This year, the black sheep of the Jeep lineup is turning 30, and now is the time to pick up a Jeep Wrangler YJ.

The 1970s and 1980s were not an easy period for the brand. Parent company American Motors struggled to maintain an aging lineup of SUVs and pickups. The iconic CJ5 was decades old and its younger brother the CJ7 was also showing a lack of innovation. Then in 1980, a single 60 minutes’ story changed the fate of the classic design forever.

A report ran in December of 1980 descried the CJ5 as being “dangerously unstable”, and demonstrated its propensity to rollover (though many question the legitimacy of this report citing unrealistic testing conditions). Regardless, the fate of the humble CJ5 was sealed, and by 1983, the model was dead.

A new design was needed, one that brought forth a sense of stability and safety. Although released after the Chrysler take over of the brand, the 1987 AMC designed Jeep brought forth new looks and a new name: Wrangler.

Code named YJ, the new Jeep marked the biggest revolution in design for the jeep since its birth in the mid 1940s’. The big unwanted news was a kink in the grill and the dreaded rectangular sealed beam headlights.

Beneath the controversial bodywork there were design changes that significantly altered the character of the vehicle. Realizing customers were driving their Jeeps on a daily basis, AMC altered the architecture to make it more usable day to day. Solid axles still meant the new Wrangler retained its legendary off-road capability, but a wider track and new conveniences increased on road driveability. CJ purists hate the lights, they hate the plastic dashboard and they hate the transition to on-road civilian duty the Wrangler name represents. But the YJ is a highly capable off-road vehicle that is an incredible value.

The YJ was produced between 1987 and 1995. Early Wranglers produced between 1987 and 1990 have the sport style roll bar, while post 1991 Wranglers incorporated a squared off rear section in order to incorporate rear shoulder belts.

Several engines were available throughout the YJ’s lifetime. Early models came equipped with either a fuel injected 2.5L four banger or a carryover of AMC’s venerable 258 carburated inline 6. While largely reliable and reasonably powerful, the most desirable choice is the fuel injected four liter inline six available from 1991. Developing 180 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque, many owners report running these workhorses for hundreds of thousands of miles between rebuilds.

Equipped with leaf springs front and rear, solid axles and of course a traditional frame, the YJ is very easy to modify, and can be turned into an off-road beast very affordably.

With fuel injection, solid axles, (relatively) modern conveniences and the go anywhere capability buyers have come to expect, the Jeep Wrangler YJ is a relatively capable vehicle with the fun loving attitude of the Jeep brand. But why is now a good time to buy one?

The YJ is verging on classic status. With the rapid rise in value of classic 4×4’s and the price associated with new wranglers, YJ’s offer an affordable way to get into the world of Jeeps and off-roading convertible fun.

Now that you’ve decided you can roll with the rectangles, what do you look for.

Several trims were available throughout the production run, most notably the top of the line Sahara and the bold Renegade. Regardless of trim, the 4.0L is the engine you want. With adequate power to motivate oversized tires and reliability to survive the harshest off-road environments, four liter YJs will typically command a slightly higher price.

Speaking of price, a good rust free 1987 -1995 Wrangler can be had for under $6000. As usual with used jeeps, you are better off finding a stock example and doing the modifications yourself then finding a highly modified Wrangler that served a hard life on the rocks.

1995 was the only year available with a fully galvanized body, there was no 1996 model year.

Regulation in the late 1990’s required cars sold in the U.S. to come equipped with OBD-2 ports, and rather than redesign the aging OBD1 diagnostic software, Chrysler stopped production in favor for the new round headlight TJs available for the 1997 model year.

I thoroughly enjoyed my year long ownership of my 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ, and while the 3 speed automatic may have sapped any and all driving sprightliness out of the reliable four liter, it was an affordable way into the Jeep world that has me hooked for life as you can tell by the video below.

2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know [Video]

2018 2017 volvo cross country v90 crossover wagon
New Volvo V90 Cross Country

The all-new Volvo V90 Cross Country joins the lineup of recently redesigned vehicles from Volvo. This large and luxurious crossover wagon picks up where the now discontinued XC70 wagon leaves off. It builds on the premium appointments, utility, and all-wheel-drive capability and takes it into the future.

The V90 is now the pinnacle of Volvo’s Cross Country wagon lineup. The car is based on the S90/V90 architecture, but the Cross Country version has a higher ground clearance, 8.3 inches in total. This is 2.3 inches more than a S90 or V90.

The wagon is powered by a 2.0L super-turbocharged four-cylinder with 316 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque @ 2,200 rpm. Fuel efficiency is estimated at 22 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. The V90 Cross Country starts at $55,300, and a fully-loaded model can reach over $73,000.

2018 Chevy Equinox Review: Lighter, Fancier, and Turbochargier: It’s Really All New!

2018 chevy equinox premier model review turbo
2018 Chevy Equinox Premier

What is most important to you in a compact crossover? Chevrolet hopes they answered all your needs with the all-new 2018 Chevy Equinox. As their second best-selling vehicle in the United Stated (behind the Chevy Silverado), the Equinox is a very important vehicle for Chevrolet. It’s also competing in one of the most popular and fastest growing segments – the compact crossover. Competition is fierce, so the Equinox better bring its top game. Has Chevrolet done enough to push the Equinox to even greater sales? Let’s break it down.

Chevrolet went to work on making the chassis and body structure smaller, lighter, stiffer, and more safe. The result is a car that is about four inches shorter, 400 pounds lighter, and (according to Chevrolet) safer than before. The NHTSA and IIHS have not published their 2018 Equinox safety ratings yet.

2018 chevy equinox suv crossover interior

While the Equinox is smaller on the outside, it retains the same passenger and cargo volume of the outgoing model. Namely, its 29.9 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row, and 63.5 cubic feet of space with the second row folded down. This is far from segment leading but it’s enough to easily swallow three roller bags, a briefcase, two tripods, and a backpack behind the second row.

The new Equinox is already on sale and it’s initially available with one engine option. Power comes from the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 170 hp @ 5,600 rpm and 203 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm. That is a lot of torque from such a small engine. The 2.0-liter turbo-gas and 1.6L turbo-diesel engines are coming in the summer of 2017 according to Chevrolet.

2018 chevy equinox suv crossover engine

The 1.5-liter turbo is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. You won’t find a 9-speed or a CVT with this engine option. This crossover is not the quickest among the main competitors (Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape) but the power is adequate for around town driving and easy highway cruising. This engine has auto stop/start as standard and it won’t let you brake-torque it too much for a boosted launch.

Chevy engineers dialed in just the right amount of weight into the electrically-assisted steering system but there is still not a lot of road feedback coming through. Overall, the lighter Equinox carves a twisty mountain road with the best in the class. The handling has been greatly improved.

The shape of the Equinox is slippery and the active front grille shutters ensure optimum aerodynamics to achieve 32 mpg on the highway for the FWD model. EPA rates the FWD model at 26 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined.

2018 chevy equinox suv crossover

Although the AWD system in the 2018 Equinox is able to disconnect the rear driveline components in driver-selectable front-wheel-drive mode for improved efficiency, the AWD model is rated at 2 mpg lower across the board for a (24/30/26 mpg).

Pricing starts at $24,475 for the L FWD model. There are four trim levels: L, LS, LT, and Premier. The Premier starts at $31,685, and the fully loaded FWD model with the 19-inch wheels and a panoramic sunroof among many other options (seen above) can reach just over $37,000.

Has Chevrolet done enough to win more sales? The 2018 Equinox is a complete package and it left a very good first impression. We will have to wait for all of the engine options and pricing to become available this summer before we can assess its success.

We are working hard to bring you the first drive review video of the 2018 Chevy Equinox. In the meantime, here is the video of its official debut.

2017 Smart Fortwo Cabriolet Test Drive: It’s Three Cars in One [Review]

smart-fortwo-cabrio-LSF

The smart car arrived on our shores after what seemed like an eternity since its inception. More than 770,000 first generation (1998-2006) smart cars were sold in 36 countries globally. smart is a member of Mercedes-Benz Cars. smart fortwo The U.S. became the 37th country to offer the innovative vehicle designed specifically for two people. The diminutive vehicle is made in France and is of Lilliputian proportions. It is only 8.8 feet long, 5.1 feet wide and 5.1 feet high. It tips the scales at 2,094 pounds in the heaviest model. The newest family member is the 2017 smart fortwo cabriolet.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-LSD
smart fortwo comes in two forms: Coupe and Cabrio , the latter featuring a fully automatic, two position convertible soft top with heated glass rear window and soft top that recedes and closes electrically at speeds up to 60 mph at the touch of a button in 12 seconds. The new smart cabrio is capable of transforming from a closed two-seater into a car with a large sliding canvas sunroof, or a full-fledged cabriolet with the soft top completely open. This flexibility offered by the “tritop” folding soft top and the removable roof bars is a special feature, making it the only true cabriolet in its vehicle class, and expanding the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio. Removing the side roof bars provides a full cabrio experience, and the roof bars may be stowed on the inside of the tailgate. This stowage compartment in the tailgate also offers additional stowage space for small items.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-LSRTO
With an area of 19.4 sq-ft the “tritop” fabric soft top is approximately four percent larger than its predecessor. The outer covering is made of a lightfast polyacrylic fabric, while the inside features a polyester/cotton mix, and there is a rubber layer in the middle. The soft top has a total thickness of 0.8 inches.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-TO
The smart fortwo is “cute”, though I normally avoid describing any vehicle as such. Many refer to it as a “clown car”, while also suggesting wearing large red bulb noses when aboard. smart fortwo displays a futuristic Jetson-like stying, and despite its reduced dimensions, is surprisingly big on interior space along with comfort and features. It is definitive proof that good things really do come in small packages. The first impression registers as cute and sporty. The innovative two-material construction concept consists of a tridion safety-cell crafted from high-strength steel and colorful, interchangeable body panels made of premium, dent resistant plastic. Projection headlamps with indicators incorporated into them adds to the little car’s futuristic look. The front, which appears as if it might house the engine, does not. Nor does it provide trunk space. Storage for one’s personal gear is behind the seats above the transversely mounted rear engine that drives the rear wheels.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-Nose
The smart fortwo cabrio is available in three trim lines: passion (standard), prime and proxy, and consumers may choose from an impressive list of safety and comfort features and equipment.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-Tail
All rear-wheel drive smart fortwo models, except the electric drive version, are powered by a 0.9-liter, (89 cc), DOHC, 12-valve inline turbocharged 3-cylinder with electronic multipoint fuel injection that produces 89 horsepower at 5,500 rpm while developing 100 pound feet of torque at 2,500 rpm. The engine connects to a Twinamic Six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission ahead of the engine. The smart fortwo cabrio is capable of reaching an electronically limited top speed of 94 mph, or from 0-60 mph in 11.6 seconds. Let’s face it, it’s not a dragster folks. The smart fortwo cabriolet rides on 15-inch alloy wheels, staggered in width and tire size as standard fare, with 16-inh donuts optionally available.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-Whl
I’ve now driven all examples of the smart fortwo – Coupe and Cabriolet, gasoline and electric-powered. My latest test vehicle was a smart fortwo cabriolet with a Hazel Brown metallic main body exterior and Black Tridion Safety panels with a Black cloth top. The interior was done in Charcoal and Black tones with satin silver painted trim accents. The base price was set at $18,900 while the final tally came to $23,650. after factoring in options, which included: the metallic body paint; Prime leather upholstery that was done in Charcoal and Black; smart phone cradle; armrest; dashboard-mounted instrument cluster; the six-speed Twinamic dual clutch transmission; JBL six-speaker sound system; Prime Package; Sport Package; and Destination Charge.

Several advanced assistance systems are available on the smart fortwo cabrio, including as standard fare, the latest-generation ESP® with Crosswind Assist and Hill Start Assist and optional forward collision warning.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-Trnk
SUMMARY: The 2017 smart fortwo cabrio Prime/Sport has a lot of things going for it – it is visually appealing to most observers, it’s economical, fun to drive, and it fits easily into minimal parking spaces (two will fit into a conventional parking space). Acceleration, while perhaps not considered blistering to some, is certainly more than adequate, and the automated manual transmission is now vastly improved over earlier examples that were similar to BMW’s SMG gearbox, with a bothersome lag between gear changes. The dual clutch type shiftable automatic transmission with the Sport Package paddle shifters is both efficient and FUN. At maximum freeway speed, crosswinds could before present cause for concern due to the car’s squared profile and short wheelbase, but a Crosswind Assist helps to offset negative stability issues.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-Int
The interior space and amenities are surprisingly plentiful and user friendly, and the ride quality is compliant enough, but it’s advisable to avoid severe potholes. The handling characteristics are athletically responsive and positive. Parking, though requiring less space as mentioned earlier, requires closer attention, because the exterior planes are difficult to judge, lacking outward reference points.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-Dsh
In the final analysis, the 2017 smart fortwo cabrio delivers on fun, practicality, fun, economy and fun.

Safety concerns are generally a major consideration given the size and construction, but after viewing several crash and roll-over test footage, smart fortwo came through the displayed tests with flying colors, bolstering enough confidence to entertain purchasing one personally. Kudos for the playful, futuristic appearance and appeal, the surprising amount of functional interior space and the easy Cabriolet top operation when underway. The gasoline powered smart fortwo cabriolet configuration is roughly half the price of the electric drive version, making gas the logical choice.
smart-fortwo-cabrio-LSR
All smart models sold in the U.S. are covered by a four-year, 50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty. All smart vehicles are designed to be 85% recyclable and over 95% reclaimable, and are produced in the environmentally oriented “smartville” factory in Hambach, France.

2017 Honda Civic Sport Team Review: The Civic Gets Its Mojo Back!

2017 honda civic hatchback sport

The 2017 Honda Civic Sport is an entry-level hatchback with sporty pretensions. Yes, a Civic Type R and Civic SI are on their way but for now, if you want a racy Civic, the Sport trim is the only option.

New for 2017, the Honda Civic hatch joins the coupe and sedan lineup with more room and more utility. Design wise, the Civic Hatch and Civic Sedan are similar from the B-pillar forward. The new hatchback can be differentiated from a sedan by the black grill. Out back our Civic Sport had not one, but two spoilers and dual center-mounted exhausts to finish out the boy-racer body kit.

Under the hood, only one engine option is available; a direct injected 1.5-Liter turbo four mated to either a 6-speed manual or continuously variable transmission. Regardless of transmission, the Sport trim makes 180 horsepower. However, if rowing the gears isn’t your thing, CVT equipped Sport Civics lose 15 lb-ft of torque (162 lb-ft down from 177). A combination of MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear suspension means the new Civic Hatch feels much more direct and planted than its affordable $22,135 price tag would suggest.

2017 honda civic hatchback sport

Speaking of price, our middle-of-the-line trim arrived with nearly no options but came standard with welcome conveniences like Bluetooth audio, automatic climate control, and a surprisingly potent audio system. While the interior may be awash in hard black plastics, the leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel fell easily and comfortably to the hand.

And speaking of shift knobs, the 6-speed manual equipped in our Rallye Red tester was both precise and light to use, easily one of the best aspects of the driving experience.

If you just can’t wait for the upcoming Honda Civic SI or Type R revealed at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the all-new Civic Hatch Sport is an engaging and affordable way into a sporty Civic that doesn’t compromise on day-to-day practicality or comfort.

For more of our thoughts on the new Civic Hatch, take a look at our team review below!

Is 2017 Honda Clarity Hydrogen-Powered Car the Future of Green Motoring? [Review]

2017 honda clarity fuel cell car

The 2017 Honda Clarity is an electric car with a significant twist. Instead of having to be plugged into the electric grid to recharge a large battery, the 2017 Honda Clarity uses a hydrogen fuel cell to charge both a 1.7-kilowatt battery and power the front wheels.

This means that it takes the 2017 Honda Clarity about 3-5 minutes to fill up instead of hours to recharge. Better yet, since the fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to form H2O, the only emission that comes out of the Clarity’s tailpipe is water.

2017 honda clarity fuel cell car

What could be cleaner and less polluting? There’s a catch of course. The hydrogen used to power the 2017 Honda Clarity is made through processes that create unwanted carbon. I found this out when I recently drove and reviewed Honda’s newest and most green car. Check out the video review below.

2017 honda clarity fuel cell car

In this special TFLcar sneak peek video review I can’t talk about driving impressions but I get the skinny on everything else that makes the 2017 Honda Clarity the most technically advanced car ever produced by Honda.

If you are like myself – and you love new and advanced technology – you’ll like the new hydrogen-powered Clarity. How can you not love a technology that NASA uses to power spacecraft? It is incredible and unfortunately not attainable for most of us. In fact, no one can buy the Clarity. Honda is only leasing the 2017 Honda Clarity in California through 12 Honda dealerships. The lease is $369.00 per month for three years and there’s already a wait at least 100 people deep.

2017 honda clarity fuel cell car

Why?

Perhaps because Honda will give you a $15,000 debit card to go along with the car to buy the very expensive hydrogen you’ll need to power your car of the future.

Check out my sneak peek video below for many more interesting details about the 2017 Honda Clarity or click HERE to watch how to fuel-up this hydrogen car.

Please let me know in the comments below if you think that hydrogen is the fuel of the future for new cars. Is it the future of green motoring or is it just an evolutionary dead end?

Future Honda Civic 3-door, Jeep Wrangler 4-cylinder turbo rumors and what’s the best small work van? [Ask Nathan]

2015 Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio

In this week’s Ask Nathan:

    • Will there be a Honda Civic 3-door?
    • Is the Jeep Wrangler 4-cylinder turbo coming?
    • Which small cargo van should I get?

This first question comes from a viewer who wants to know if there will be a Honda Civic 3-door hatchback.

Q:Hi, saw your Honda Civic hatchback video!

Do you think that Honda will ever build a Honda Civic 3-door hatchback? Do you think it will sell in America?

Ted

A: Hi Ted!

I’m sorry to say, there have been no announcements or even rumors about a Honda Civic 3-door variant coming to the United States. There are a lot of people out there that miss the old Honda Civic 3-Door; that’s including myself. You see, the first Honda Civic 3-door I “officially” tested was the amazing 2002 Si hatchback. I loved it.

The Honda Civic 3-door you see in this post is the Honda Gear Concept which debuted at the 2013 Montreal International Auto Show. It still looks awesome, but it’s a design that Honda will probably never adopt.

N

This next question comes from a fan who wants information on the upcoming Jeep Wrangler with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

2018 Jeep Wrangler jl
Jeep Wrangler JL test mule

Q: So, I have heard there might be a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine taking place of the Pentastar V6 in the next Jeep Wrangler.

Is that true? Is this a thing now, replacing V6 for 4-cylinder turbos? Seems like everyone else is doing it.

Are you guys heading to Moab this year?

Hank from Nebraska

2018 jeep wrangler rubicon jl spy
2018 Jeep Wrangler prototype (by Jeff F.)

A: Howdy Hank!

Rumor has it that there will be a 2-liter “Hurricane” 4-cylinder engine that could make us as much as 300 horsepower and, possibly up to 290 lb-feet of torque. It could replace or supplement the Pentastar V6. It’s supposed to be lighter, more frugal and red-line over 6,000 rpm. Adding to that rumor, it may have the 8-speed automatic (used in the Ram 1/2 ton) and, possibly, a 6-speed manual.

These rumors have a lot of momentum as there have been sightings of the engine on more than one occasion. It’s also rumored that the Wrangler will (eventually) get the 3-liter V6 turbo-diesel currently used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1/2 ton.

I’m excited to see what Jeep comes up with!

N

The last question comes from a viewer who wants to buy a small cargo van.

Ram-ProMaster-City-RSFC

Q: Hi Nathan and Roman! I have a cargo van question for you.

My uncle has a dealership near Jacksonville, Florida and has two vans from 2015 that he will help me buy. One is the Nissan NV200 and the other one is a Ram Pro Master City. I know they compete, but I don’t know which one makes more sense.

I only have to haul 800 or so pounds, so I know that both can handle that, but I need the van to be a comfortable commuter too. Which one do you think would be best as an all-around driver?

The only passenger would be my mother on occasion.

Thanks!

Haleh. I

nissa nv200 chevy city express van

A: Hi Haleh!

The Nissan NV200 is an easier vehicle to drive in the city, but the Ram ProMaster City is the best all-around driver out of the two. They are very different vehicles and they both have their virtues.

The Nissan NV200 gets great gas mileage and is a snap to drive in the city. Parking and loading are easy too.

The Ram ProMaster City has a higher capacity, great power and is nearly as good as the Nissan around town. Its highway ride is pretty good and its overall cargo setup is excellent. It can tow as well.

Best of luck!

2017 Jaguar F-Pace: Rewarding to Drive and Surprisingly Practical [Review]

2017 Jaguar F-PACE

Jaguar pounces on the growing segment of SUV and crossovers with the introduction of their all-new F-PACE high-performance, premium crossover. More than just a pretty face, the big cat is also great to drive, surprisingly practical, and inherently capable of venturing off-road. Arriving late to the game, can Jaguar’s new premium and performance-oriented SUV compete in the same realm as the BMW X4, Porsche Macan, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Audi SQ5?

“We develop every Jaguar vehicle to offer an unrivaled combination of agility and responsiveness with exceptional ride and refinement – and the all-new F-PACE is no exception,” said, Mike Cross, Chief Engineer of Vehicle Integrity, Jaguar. “Applying all of the learning from F-TYPE, the steering reacts immediately, giving a truly connected feel. The double wishbone and Integral Link suspension offer the ideal balance of precise handling and body control, making the all-new F-PACE as rewarding to drive as it is comfortable to be driven in.”

Recent models coming from the JLR Design and Engineering Centre in Gaydon have been fabulous and downright striking. Built on the same platform as the new XE and redesigned XF sedans, the F-PACE is constructed mostly of aluminum and its contours carry influences from the beautiful F-TYPE sports car. The wide stance lends to its aggressive look and performance is worthy of being in the same ring as the established competition put forth by BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz.

2017 Jaguar F-PACE interior

Slip into the cabin and you are surrounded by a warm and upscale looking passenger zone with lots of high-tech features. There is no question that the interior looks expensive and feels expensive. Seating position is close to car-like and ultra-comfortable. Everything is conveniently close at hand and the cabin has a luxurious feel to it – if you ignore some of the hard plastic panels. Essentially, you can have your fun with it but on any day of the week, this is a classy Jag that is stately, comfortable, and serene when you want it to be a proper coach.

Ignite the engine and you are greeted with a robust roar followed by a warm burble. At wide open throttle, the F-PACE really comes alive – the sound is fantastic! Soundtrack from the engine is very close to an F-TYPE.

In lackadaisical drive mode, Jaguar’s crossover behaves like a perfunctory luxury car that is comfortable, quiet, and carries itself with class. Switch to sport mode, storm your favorite ribbon of asphalt, and everything comes alive. The exhaust sound is intoxicating. The handling is sublime. And the power delivery will make you make you giddy as a school kid.

2017 Jaguar F-PACE

With a boatload of torque and generous amounts of horsepower, the supercharged V6 will rocket the F-PACE from zero to sixty in 5.1 seconds. In the twisties, it is hard to believe a tall crossover/SUV drives as good as the F-PACE. Nevertheless, it’s simply astounding. Admittedly, the dimensions require some extra care when maneuvering in tight places but Jaguar has done an excellent job transferring its sports car finesse to the F-PACE. Steering response is highly responsive. Body lean in the turns is kept to a minimum, and the all-wheel drive will boost the confidence level of the driver to new levels.

Even though the Macan and X3 are also all-wheel drive, the F-PACE feels different because of its rear-wheel bias. With the F-PACE, 90 percent of the power is coming from the rear tires and that makes a world of difference. Turn it loose on the back roads and the day’s stress just washes away. The buzzy exhaust note will put a smile on your face and the F-PACE becomes your perfect dance partner as the miles unwind underneath you. Without a doubt, Jaguar’s sporty crossover is a blast to drive.

Need a little more convincing? Pragmatists will like the Jaguar for its 5-year/60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty that includes free maintenance and roadside assistance.

Other cars to consider: Acura RDX, Audi SQ5, BMW X3, BMW X4, Mercedes GLC-Class, Porsche Macan, Lexus NX, Cadillac CTS, Lincoln MKC, Volvo XC60, Land Rover Discovery Sport
