Mach 1: Ford’s Bringing It Back, but Not Where You’d Expect [Breaking News]

Ford teases the revival of the “Mach 1” nameplate as part of the brand’s massive electrification strategy

Ford came to the 2018 North American International Auto Show with all sorts of goodies for us. First up, the company revealed the performance-oriented Edge ST model. After that, Ford revealed the return of the hotly-anticipated Ranger mid-size pickup. Then, they had a surprise in store…the latest iteration of the iconic Ford Mustang Bullitt, built in commemoration of the 50-year anniversary of the 1968 film Bullitt and Steve McQueen’s iconic Mustang.

Even then, Ford had one more thing up their sleeve. Right after the Bullitt reveal, Ford cheekily inserted this teaser video, showing the “inspiration” for a new battery electric performance SUV. Its caption: “Inspired by icons. Developed by Ford Team Edison. Born in Detroit. A new all-electric performance SUV. Coming 2020.”

Now, Ford did not share any other details on this new model during the press conference, other than to say it will bear the Mach 1 nameplate and it’s coming in 2020. However, the teaser video and the tweet above from Ford rep Mike Levine show it may be a battery-powered performance SUV. The Mach 1’s last appearance was with the Ford Mustang, as a special edition sold in 2003 and 2004 – the final years of its fourth generation.

According to Ford, the Mach 1 is just the beginning. There will be up to 40 nameplates, split between electric and hybrid models, by 2022. What do you think of the Mach 1’s return? Let us know in the comments below!
