Volkswagen Teases New Jetta GLI Ahead of Chicago Auto Show

How much power will the new GLI have?

Volkswagen teased the brand new 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI on Twitter, set to debut at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show. Here’s what we know so far.

What do we know?

We have known that a new GLI is on the way since VW debuted the all-new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. However, we did not know much about when it would arrive. Well, we know that it is going to make its entrance at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show. But what else do we currently know?

From the teaser video in VW’s Tweet, we know the new GLI will get a very familiar ‘red lipstick’ treatment. The red stripe across the grille is still a part of the GLI’s look. However, it has been updated to match the new Jetta’s latest design.

A familiar engine

The Tweet quotes the ‘❤️ of a GTI’. That heart is a very familiar engine to the VW family, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In the current GTI it makes 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Though, rumors about the next-generation GTI suggest that same engine could put out as much as 286 horsepower in the Mk8 GTI. Could the new GLI feature a similar power output? Some VW purists might see it strange to sell a GLI with more power than the current GTI. But, we will just have to wait and see what VW does at Chicago.

The transmission choices will likely reflect the current GTI as well. Those are a choice of a 6-speed manual transmission, or a 7-speed dual clutch unit. Of course, either transmission sends power to the front wheels.

That is really all we know for now. The 2019 Chicago Auto Show kicks off on February 7th, 2019. You can expect more information about the brand new Jetta GLI in the coming days.
