In what could be an attempt to prove to the world that they’re ready to move on from their diesel emissions scandal, Volkswagen is reported to have a 300-mile electric vehicle ready to debut at the Paris auto show.
Website Electrek reported that Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess made the announcement in an interview with German magazine Wirtschafts Woche. Diess said that the vehicle should get 400 to 600 km per charge, or 248 to 372 miles.
That averages out to 310 miles, which would eclipse the range of the Tesla Model S, which gets at most 295 miles on a constant 65-mph range, according to Tesla’s website. The EPA 5-cycle range is 270. Both these numbers are for the dual-motor P85D.
Another hint that Diess gave to the magazine is that the car would be the size of the Golf but have the cargo space of the Passat. This implies either a crossover or tall MPV, which begs the question of whether this will be the debut of a near-production version of the BUDD-e concept car. The BUDD-e debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this year.
