The Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4² will be one of the most capable, purpose-built off-road vehicles sold in the United States. That’s right, it’s headed for our shores.
Based on the six-wheel (6X6) G550, the Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4² removes the third axle but keeps all the other off-road upgrades. The heavier-duty, off-road suspension is lifted to 17.2-inches of ground clearance. A three-foot-plus water fording depth, beefier tires and better articulation are part of the package.
The approach angle has drastically increased to 51.6 degrees with a departure angle of 43.8 degrees. At 47.4 degrees, the break-over angle is nearly doubled the current G550 and extreme compared to any factory-built off-road vehicle sold in North America.

Low Range mode reduces the center differential gear ratio from 1:1 to 1:2 which allows for slow, more controllable off-road driving, including on steep descents. Low Range mode also helps to reduce strain on various drivetrain components.
By locking front, center and rear differentials in Low Range mode, each wheel will spin at the same RPM, thus directing torque to the wheels which are able to obtain traction. The G-Class is able to move forward even if only a single wheel is able to gain traction.” — Mercedes-Benz USA
The same 416 horsepower, 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 that makes 450 pound-feet of torque is the one currently available in the G550. The 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission will be the only transmission available for the Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4². No word yet on an AMG-version, nor is the 6X6 G550 being discussed – yet.Prices have yet to be announced. The Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4² will be available at US dealers by early 2017.
