It’s pretty safe to say that the Renegade is a success for Jeep.
The little crossover once again led subcompact crossover sales by a wide margin, extending its overall yearly lead in the process.
Renegade sales were up an exaggerated 146 percent for the month and 344 percent for the year, although that’s actually not the highest yearly increase in the segment.
More importantly, the Renegade’s sales were up 11.7 percent from May to April. This is despite the fact that there were fewer sales days in May 2016 than there were in May 2015, which hurt many vehicle’s sales numbers.
The second-place Subaru Crosstrek (don’t call it an XV) had a solid month, with a 7.5 percent monthly increase and about a two percent yearly increase. However, it was still short of the Renegade by nearly 2,500 sales.
The Honda HR-V has hit its stride, staying ahead of the GM twins that it beat out last month and keeping its third-place position. Sales were up 15.8 percent for the month, and yearly sales are up an exaggerated 368 percent.
Both the Renegade’s and HR-V’s yearly sales increases are skewed because they weren’t available for a full year in 2015. The Renegade was only available for part of the month last year, which accounts for the exaggerated monthly increase.
Rounding out the top four is the Buick Encore. All for top sellers in the segment had sales increases for the month, with the Encore having the highest non-exaggerated number at 20.8 percent. The Encore still has the third-highest yearly sales number, but if June is like July, the HR-V may eclipse it.
It is still amazing that the Encore consistently outsells its Chevrolet sibling, the Trax, despite having a smaller sales network. The Trax actually dropped 10 percent for the month and trailed the Encore by 1,400 sales.
