Today Jeep announced the four distinct trim levels for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee and their starting prices. The two wheel drive Cherokee Sport will start at $22,995 before destination and handling charges. This happens to be $400 under the starting price of a base 2012 Jeep Liberty 4×2.
The new Cherokee will have to do battle in a fiercely competitive segment (although every segment is dog-eat-dog these days). This Jeep will get cross-shopped against leaders such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota Rav4, and newcomers like the Mazda CX-5. The Cherokee will not have to lowest entry price nor the best fuel economy. The 9-speed automatic still cannot match the efficient SkyActive drivetrain from Mazda. However, the Jeep provides a selection of capable 4×4 systems, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and the 2.4 liter Tigershark I4 engine is one of the torquiest (at 171 lb-ft).

The Sport model is focused on value and even provides nice touches like a Uconnect 5.0 touchscreen center console media and entertainment system with Bluetooth, USB, and SD ports as standard equipment. The Latitude is Cherokee’s planned volume leader and throws in nice exterior upgrades, such as: body color trim, fog lamps, an aluminum 17 inch wheels. It can also be ordered with the new 3.2 liter Pentastar V6 good for 271 horses. The Limited trim adds most of the luxury features you can think of, while still keeping the price in check.
The Trailhawk is the most macho of the group. It stands apart with more aggressive exterior trim, wheels, and tires. It comes with the most capable Jeep Active Drive Lock 4×4 system, and still can be had with a choice of an I4 or a V6.
Jeep says the new Cherokee will be available for sale in “the third quarter of this year”. You should check with your dealer, but expect the new crossover to arrive around September 2013.
