Newer, bigger, cheaper: Volkwagen lowers price of base new 2011 Jetta to…

The good news is that if you are in the market for a new Jetta the base model will be cheaper than the outgoing car.

The new redesigned Jetta will start at $15,995, of course that's not including a $770 destination charge.

But that does include a $1,740 reduction in price…at least when compared to the 2010 model.

The new car is also 2.9 inches bigger with most of that space felt in the backseat legroom.

The new Jetta has a substantially bigger trunk (15.5 cubic feet) and of course it wears the companies new grill and design language.

The bad news?

The new base Jetta comes with fewer standard features, and it still remains to be seen how many base models will actually be available at your local dealership.

However the new Jetta will be available in four trim levels, S, SE, SEL and TDI with either a 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a 170-hp, 2.5-liter five-cylinder (the same one available in today's car.)

There's a five-speed manual transmission available in the base model, and a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox mated to the bigger engine in the more expensive trim levels.

The top of the line Jetta will be the TDI (starting at $22,995) which will come with the 2010's 140-hp, 2.0-liter diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual. You can also get the TDI with Volkwagen's more advanced six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. That transmission will only be available in the TDI.

The new gas Jetta's will be at your local dealership this fall with the TDI powered car coming just a bit later.
