Ford’s refreshed 2016 Explorer made an appearance at the 2015 Denver Auto Show and TFLcar was there to find out more.
The new Explorer, which will be on sale in June, sports a newly designed front end incorporating LED lights and a new hood, grille and skid plate. The rear has also been freshened with LED taillights.
The big news for the 2016 Explorer is the addition of the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, which replaces the 2.0-liter in previous models. The new engine makes 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque and is available in all wheel drive. The 2.3-liter models have a 3,000 pound towing capacity and Ford expects them to get 28 miles per gallon on the highway.
Also new for 2016 is the Platinum model, the new top-of-the-line trim that combines all the options of the Sport and Premium models. There are no options to choose from; everything is standard. The Platinum model will cost $52,600 before destination costs.
