Video review: Top 4 Crossovers that should never go off-road

Nonoffroad

Here’s an odd fact. Many of today’s newest and most popular crossovers can’t go off-road…even though they have all-wheel-drive, and they also have the rugged looks and design cues of more traditional off-road worthy SUV’s.

Of course that doesn’t mean that they are not fun to drive or can’t take on a dirt or a snow covered road.

It just means that while they look like they could take you to Everest and back, they can really only get you to the supermarket and back on snowy afternoon or perhaps to your favorite fishing hole down a dirt road.

But which of these new breed of non off-road worthy cars is the best?

Below are our top 4 fun Crossovers that should never go off-road that we’ve driven this year.

Video: the very last Crown Vic rolls off the assembly line & into the sunset

Crownvic

The very last Crown Victoria rolled off the assembly line at 12:30 p.m. this week in St. Thomas, Ontario, ending what senior editor Andrew Ganz of Left Lane News called, “a bygone era of Detroit boulevardiers, with their front bench seats, soft suspensions and awkward, space-robbing proportions”.

After decades of car production the Canadian car plant is closing, and the much loved Crown Vic of police departments and taxi cab drivers around the country will be replaced by the all-new Ford police Interceptor sedans and SUVs.

The new Ford workhorse cars replacing the Crown Vic are based partially on the Ford Taurus and will be built in a car plant n Chicago’s South Side starting early next year.

The boys in blue at Ford sold about 80,000 Crown Victorias and Town Cars last year to police departments and Taxi cab companies around the country.

The new Ford Police Interceptor sedans and SUVs will offer better performance and better fuel economy, but unlike the Crown Vic the new cars will be front wheel drive.

Check out the video below as we take an up close and in depth look at the new Ford Police Interceptor sedan and SUV.

Video review: Can the 2011 Jaguar XJL beat a sports car in straight line?

JaguarXJL

The 2011 Jaguar XJL is a very big luxury sedan with a very big 385 HP 5.0L V8 engine.

Sitting in the roomy back seat of the stretched Jag can be an absolute treat with fine leather seats and plenty of leg room to stretch out and get comfy. The 2011 Jaguar XJL will easily transport a British royal or a London businessman across town in silent, modern luxury.

However is the back seat the best place to be in the Jaguar XJL? Perhaps it is better to drive than to ride in this newest luxury Jaguar.

In other words, does driver of the XJL have all the fun?

There’s no doubt that the Jaguar can get mighty frisky when the road turns twisty. In fact the Jaguar XJL is one of the most engaging big luxury sedans sold today with precise steering, solid straight line stability, and of course plenty of power to put the common cars in their place.

But how fast can this big cat sprint from 0 to 60 MPH? Will it keep up or even beat sports car?

Check out this first drive review below to find out.

2012 Wrangler Unlimited review: A much needed upgrade to the iconic Jeep

IMG_6728

Few things are more American than a bottle of Coca-Cola or a Jeep.

Jeep wisely decided to expand its line with the addition of its larger, more comfortable four-door Wrangler Unlimited in 2007. The two-door Wrangler model continued, but the Unlimited soon became—and is—the only Jeep for serious sustained road travel.

The Unlimited also became the first four-door convertible with a soft or removable hard top. It retained Jeep’s traditional features, which include a seven-slot grille and round headlights.

Video review: the 2011 Toyota Tacoma TX Pro takes on the Colorado Rockies

IMG_2602

Can you teach an old pick-up a new trick…or in other words, can the 2011 Toyota Tacoma TX Pro TRD pick-up truck take on the Colorado Rockies?

The Toyota Tacoma has been around a long time.

Toyota has not really changed the pick-up in any significant way for over a dozen years.

Sure Toyota has tweaked the looks and the two engine choices but at the core the Tacoma has not changed. Many people would say why mess with success.

For 2011 the Tacoma gets a TX Pro and TRD (Toyota Racing development) option making it even more off-road worth with such goodies as off-road tuned suspension, 18 inch wheels and specific off-road worthy BF Goodrich tires and even a locking rear differential.

So does all of this extra rugged stuff make the Tacoma the Jeep or Land Rover of the pick-up world?

In the first drive review below we put the new Tacoma TX Pro TRD to the test.

2011 Acura TSX video review: Do the words ‘sport’ and ‘wagon’ really go together?

Tsx

Do the words “sport” and “wagon” really go together?

You bet they do.

With naturally athletic and precisely balanced steering, a rev happy 201HP 2.4-liter inline-4 mated with a paddle-shift 5-speed automatic, the Acura TSX Sport Wagon will put a huge smile on the face of any driving enthusiast.

Best of all, since the Acura TSX Sport Wagon is 1.3 inches longer and 130 pounds heavier it also carries more of it’s weight further back which means it now has 57/43 front/rear weight distribution, versus roughly 59/41 for a similarly equipped TSX sedan.

The 2011 Acura TSX Sports Wagon proves that you can combine the utility of a wagon with the frisky handling of a sports car.

Check out this first drive video review as we put the 2011 Acura TSX sport wagon to the test.
