General Motors has plans to invest nearly $1.3 billion in two assembly plants and three powertrain plants located in several different states. The plants receiving this investment are spread out in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
There are a total of five facilities which will be getting upgrades to produce new fuel efficient engines and transmissions as well as streamline current logistics. The investments are also expected to create or retain about 1,000 jobs.
General Motors says the plants affected will be in Detroit, Romulus, and Flint, Michigan; Toledo, Ohio, and Bedford, Indiana. All five plants will be supporting production of an existing 6-speed transmission as well as a new 10-speed transmission and a new V6.
The Flint, Michigan plant, which currently builds light-duty and heavy-duty pickups, will get $600 million for upgrades that include a new paint shop. The Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant is getting $121 million for a new logistics optimization center. This plant produces the Chevy Malibu, Impala and Volt.
The Romulus Powertrain Operations will get $493.4 million which includes $343.4 million to produce a new 10-speed automatic transmission and $150 million toward increasing capacity of a new V6 that was previously announced. This is on top of a $390 million retooling happening at that plant which resulted in the layoff of 500 workers through 2015.
Outside of Michigan, General Motors will be investing $30.6 million in the Toledo Transmission Operations in Ohio in order to increase capacity on the existing 6-speed transmission. They will also be making changes to accommodate an upcoming new variant.
General Motors final investment will be $29.2 million toward the Bedford Castings in Indiana. This will include $22.6 million for making the components of the new 10-speed transmission with the remaining $6.6 million going toward components for an existing 6-speed.
Since 2009, General Motors has invested $10.1 billion in its US operations with $2.8 billion of that coming in the current year. They estimate that those investments have created or retained about 26,500 jobs.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is all new and comes packed with technical advancements and a sleek exterior. The United States gets two 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class variants: the C300 4MATIC which has a 235 horsepower, four-cylinder engine that makes 273 lbs-feet of torque. The (current) top 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the C400 4MATIC that comes with a 329 hp V6 that makes 354 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are direct-injected and they are connected to an updated 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission.
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz is 3.7-inches longer than the outgoing model and the wheelbase is 3-inches longer. The total length of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is now 184 inches long with a 112-inch wheelbase. Width has increased 1.6-inches to a total of 71-inches. Total cargo room in the trunk has grown to 17 cubic-feet.
“Mercedes at its best – that’s the new C-Class, which sets new standards for the mid-range segment on many fronts,” says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “It is characterised by an emotional yet clear design which is continued in the high-quality and modern interior. Its efficient and high-performance engineering provides the basis for a high standard of driving enjoyment.”
Ola Källenius, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars, adds: “The new C-Class embodies Mercedes-Benz’s claim ‘The best or nothing’ in uncompromising style. This is immediately apparent when encountering our new Saloon for the first time, as it creates the impression that one is sitting in a higher class of automobile. I am sure that our customers will be delighted by the high-class appeal and agility of the new C-Class.”
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is about 220-lbs lighter than its predecessor and its stell/aluminum structure is much stiffer over the older C-Class. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class has a nearly 50-percent aluminum body structure. This light weight contributes to a significant gain in fuel economy.
As Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG, notes: “The new C-Class showcases automotive passion by way of a contemporary design idiom. Progressive and emotional highlights underscore the ground-breaking design style of the new C-Class and demonstrate sensual clarity. The new C-Class interprets modern luxury on a new level.”
Further upgrades continue underneath the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class with new suspension systems.
“The new C-Class Sedan is fitted as standard with a steel suspension. Two suspensions with selective damping systems are available:
a comfortable yet sporty base suspension
a sports suspension lowered by .6 inches as part of the optional Sport Package
First air suspension in this category
Alternatively, the new C-Class is the first vehicle in its segment that can be fitted with an air suspension (AIRMATIC) on the front and rear axles. Thanks to electronically controlled, continuous variable damping at the front and rear, it offers outstanding road roar and tire vibration characteristics even with the vehicle loaded. The driver can use the AGILITY SELECT switch to choose between the various characteristics: “Comfort”, “ECO”, “Sport” and “Sport+.” The additional “Individual” option enables drivers to configure their vehicle according to their own wishes. AIRMATIC also features all-round self-leveling for optimum ride comfort even when the vehicle is loaded.
Sensuous clarity and purist forms.” -Mercedes-Benz Media
Externally, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class gets a completely new, sleek skin. Looking like a cross between the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and a hint of the CLA’s design character, it is a sophisticated look. Mercedes-Benz says, “Precise lines and sculptural surfaces create lively light and shade effects” and “aesthetically sensuous lines and surfaces, whose harmony and dynamism create an immediate effect.” It is indeed a very new look that gives the impression of modern, muscular sculpting.
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz is a modern, sophisticated vehicle that’s filled with the newest safety and infotainment equipment. Much of this equipment was sourced or inspired by the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class. No other vehicle in this class offers this array of safety and entertainment/information equipment.
“DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist is a semi-automatic traffic jam assistant which at speeds under 37 mph is able to follow the vehicle ahead even where lane markings are unclear or completely lacking, thus providing a safe and convenient means of following the flow of traffic.
The BAS PLUS Brake Assist System can now also detect crossing traffic and boost the braking force if the driver fails to apply the brakes sufficiently; the PRE-SAFE® Brake can detect stationary vehicles as well as pedestrians, brake automatically if the driver fails to react, thus preventing accidents up to 31 mph and mitigating the severity of collisions at speeds of up to 45 mph. In flowing traffic the PRE-SAFE® Brake provides assistance according to the same mode of operation throughout the speed range from 4 to 124 mph.
Enhanced Active Lane Keeping Assist can now also prevent the vehicle from unintentionally drifting out of lane when broken lane markings apply and a risk of a collision arises, e.g. as a result of vehicles overtaking at high speed, parallel traffic or even oncoming traffic, by applying the brakes on one side.
The numerous assistance systems also include
Active Parking Assist, which enables automated parking with active steering and brake intervention in both parallel and end-on parking spaces,
a 360° camera, which is able to show the vehicle and its surroundings from various perspectives, including a virtual bird’s eye view,
Traffic Sign Assist with Wrong-Way Alert, which warns of speed limits and alerts the driver to no-overtaking zones and no-entry signs,
Airbags for safety
In addition to 3-point seat belts with pyrotechnical belt tensioning and belt force limitation for the driver, the front passenger and those in the outer rear seats, numerous airbags serve to protect the vehicle’s occupants in an accident. These include:
Pelvis bags for driver and front passenger
a newly developed window bag
side bags for the outer rear seats
a knee bag for the driver
The front passenger seat is fitted as standard with automatic child seat recognition, which dispenses with the previous transponder in favor of a weight mat. This enables any child seat to be used. The airbag is automatically deactivated when a child seat is fitted and reactivated once it has been removed.
Air conditioning: signals from space
Mercedes-Benz has undertaken systematic further development and substantial improvement of the air conditioning system in the new C-Class. This applies in particular to the control quality, performance, efficiency and air quality. The new C-Class is also the only vehicle in the segment to offer tunnel detection via satellite navigation. It uses the map information from the navigation system and the GPS location data to close the air recirculation flap automatically when the vehicle enters a tunnel, subsequently re-opening it when the vehicle emerges from the tunnel.
Another highlight contributing to a feel-good atmosphere is the AIR-BALANCE package with active fragrancing, air ionization and more efficient filtration than is available on the standard model.
Vibrant infotainment
A completely new multimedia generation offers intuitive operation in the new C-Class, featuring elaborate animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner. The new C-Class is also equipped with the unique Frontbass system. This avant-garde acoustic systems uses the space within the cross-member and side member in the body structure as a resonance chamber for the bass speakers to conjure up a listening experience almost on a par with a concert hall. A Burmester® surround sound system is optionally available.
The navigation system presents its contents in interactive mode. Its features include an animated compass, a “Drive Show” with information for passengers similar to the on-screen presentations on board airplanes and Google Maps displayed on the head unit.

There’s a lot to like in the new 2014 BMW 335i Gran Turismo and it’s not just about the drive. Styling on this one is a little more sporty than the rest of the 3 Series line with fender-mounted vents to improve aerodynamics, taller headlights and a taller kidney grille.
There’s also a large rear hatch that could make the whole thing look like a bloated station wagon, egads, but it manages to maintain its sporty appeal while taking full advantage of that hatchback’s functionality. Overall it’s 7.9″ longer and 3.2″ taller than the 3 Series Sport Wagon and has an extra 2.3″ of rear passenger space making it very comfortable and roomy.
There is space aplenty, not just for cargo, but for passengers front and rear. You’ll easily sit two in the back and even three will be comfortable for a decent length of time before squirming and fidgeting commence. When you’re not hauling people, the rear seats are ridiculously adjustable to 15 different configurations with a 40/20/40 split to accommodate all kinds of cargo.
The 2014 BMW 335i GT has 18.4 cubic feet of cargo space and if you fold down the rear seats all the way to their not quite full-flat positions you’ll have 56.5 cubic feet. This makes it again more spacious than the wagon while still looking far more edgy. A wagon like the Audi Allroad will have similar cargo space but it’s not going to look nearly as good.
Interior finishes are just what you’d expect from BMW with high-end materials and luxe looking trims. Seats are comfortable and adjustable to just the right position and are nicely supportive. There is a full range of available tech and convenience options with all the usual suspects like heated seats and steering wheel, backup cameras, a heads-up display and an M Sport package which will lower your suspension and improve handling.
You get a 3.0-liter turbocharged in-line six-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque under the hood along with an 8-speed automatic transmission. There are also steering wheel mounted paddle shifters for when you want a little more control over that powerful engine.
It’s smooth and quiet, shifting neatly and never getting too riled in moderate driving conditions. You might think it’s tame, but when you press the gas and demand all that horsepower get up and gallop, you will feel it press you back in your seat to the sweet sounds of a suddenly boisterous engine. The Cadillac CTS Wagon might be worth considering if you’re looking for even more horsepower.
I tested the 2014 BMW 335i Gran Turismo with the M Sport package and found handling crisp and responsive. The wheel has a heavy, solid feel that allows great control of the vehicle without becoming sluggish and offers good road feedback. Factor in Driver Dynamics Control and you’re going to be able to get exactly the ride you want behind the wheel.
You can choose from Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport or Sport+ settings which adjust spring damping, steering effort, shift timing and throttle response for a progressively sportier drive. In many vehicles the Eco mode or its equivalent is almost unbearable except for the most laid back of drivers, but not in this case.
Although the 2014 BMW 335i Gran Turismo loses a lot of its umph in Eco Pro mode, it’s still a pleasant drive. Comfort mode takes it easy but is fantastically responsive and perfect for everyday driving. Move on to the Sport settings and you’ll really get that engine and your heart rate going. Your MPG will suffer, but you aren’t going to care.

Congratulations to the People’s Republic of China for successfully landing China’s Yutu ‘Jade Rabbit’ Moon Rover. China is now among a small group of countries to land and drive a rover on the surface of the moon. Only the United States and the Soviet Union/Russia have successfully landed rovers on the surface of the moon.
According to the Beijing Aerospace Control Center, the 140 kilogram (approximately 309 lbs) rover dug its six wheels into the moon’s surface at 4:35 a.m. (IANA) Chang’e-3 probe soft-landed on the moon 13 days after liftoff in Sinus Iridum, (Bay of Rainbows) an area that is fairly flat from ancient volcanic activity.
China’s Yutu ‘Jade Rabbit’ Moon Rover will begin information gathering which will include a powerful radar device that can scan as deep as 300-feet into the surface. Future missions may target helium-3 as it is a major treasure. China’s Yutu ‘Jade Rabbit’ Moon Rover
China’s Yutu ‘Jade Rabbit’ Moon Rover is a huge accomplishment and, I suspect, a few US politicians will be rather displeased that China has advanced so rapidly. China is talking about moon bases, space stations and more. Keep in mind: the Chinese space initiative is overseen by China’s military. The way I look at it: China may help stoke the flames of our own space ambitions and help the United States reassert itself in this endeavor.
“The dream of the Chinese people across thousands of years of landing on the moon has finally been realized with Chang’e,” said the China News Service, a state-run news agency. “By successfully joining the international deep-space exploration club, we finally have the right to share the resources on the moon with developed countries.”
The Chang’e-3 landing craft carried a solar-powered, robotic rover called the Jade Rabbit, or Yutu in Mandarin Chinese, which was to emerge several hours later to begin exploring Sinus Iridum, or the Bay of Rainbows, a relatively smooth plain formed from solidified lava. According to a Chinese legend, Chang’e is a moon goddess, accompanied by a Jade Rabbit that can brew potions that offer immortality.
“It’s a very ambitious mission in the sense that it’s a rover with a fair amount of instruments on it,” said Andrew Chaikin, a space historian and an expert on lunar travel. The instruments include radar to gather information about what lies as deep as 300 feet below the surface, Chinese space scientists have said.
“There is the potential that some really interesting science could come out of this,” Mr. Chaikin said. – – The New York Times
China’s Yutu ‘Jade Rabbit’ Moon Rover mission represents a starting bell that most of the technically advanced world should heed. Should be an exciting time for space and science. A new space race has begun!

With the release of Ron Howard’s “Rush” earlier this year, it seems that there would be little more to say about Formula 1’s most famous rivalry. Howard’s film provides an accurate account of the tension existing between McLaren’s James Hunt and Ferrari’s Niki Lauda while romanticizing the details enough for even the non-gearhead to appreciate the turbulent 1976 F1 season. However, coming from a more objective and analytical standpoint is Revolver Entertainment’s “1976: Hunt vs. Lauda,” a short, accurate, and extremely powerful documentary that provides the ultimate insider’s look on the rivalry.
The most significant step that Revolver Group’s film takes is to first juxtapose the personalities, not the racing styles, of James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Lauda is described as the “steely, cold Austrian,” while Hunt is the, “flamboyant” womanizer who, “partied as hard as he raced.” Rather than claiming that Hunt was a risk-taker on the racetrack while Lauda was more conservative, the documentary simply shows their conflicting outlooks in everyday life–newly-released footage of an Formula 1 afterparty portrays Hunt as the heart and soul of the party while his Austrian counterpart lurks in the shadows. This incompatibility of personalities provides the perfect lens through which viewers can begin to understand the reasons for the rivalry.
“1976: Hunt vs. Lauda” also does a fantastic job of collecting information about the rivalry from (relatively) unbiased sources who were close to the action. Instead of interviewing Formula 1 media moguls of the time, the producers questioned only those directly involved in the lives of the two men: Daniele Audetto, Team Manager at Ferrari Formula 1 with Lauda, Alastair Caldwell, Team Manager at McLaren Formula 1 with Hunt, and Sally Hunt, James’ own sister, were among those interviewed. The producers were even able to question Niki Lauda himself, providing an extremely personal account of the ruthless competition during the 1976 season.
C0mmendable, too, is the fact that “1976: Hunt vs. Lauda” didn’t ignore the casual friendship that did exist between Hunt and Lauda in the 1976 season. A film searching to portray fiery competition at every corner would have glossed over their acquaintance at all costs–Revolver Group’s documentary, however, made the audience fully aware of the drivers’ friendship and even included Niki Lauda remarking that he would, “go to the pub” with James Hunt. Such a detail makes the tension that existed between Hunt and Lauda on the racetrack even more significant, as each had to put aside all feelings of friendship in order to unleash brutal competition. Despite these accolades, one critique of “1976: Hunt vs. Lauda” lies with the documentary’s subtitle, “The Greatest Rivalry of All Time.” It seems a bit ambitious to deem a one-year rivalry in a nascent sport as the “greatest of all time,” but the title does little to detract from the high quality of the documentary.
For those who appreciate the true, uncensored account of the incredible events of the 1976 Formula 1 racing season, there is no substitute for Revolver Entertainment’s “1976: Hunt vs. Lauda.” Its down-to-earth, un-romanticized approach to the famous rivalry is relatable and emotional at the same time, and the documentary is a must-see for any autophile. “1976: Hunt vs. Lauda” will be released on January 7, 2014, on DVD and VOD.

Jeep says the Jeep Wrangler 392 V8 is about to meet its maker...but with recent developments at Stellantis we're skeptical that's actually going to happen.
After several years on the model's top trims, the Hyundai Santa Fe will no longer ship with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (and that's a good thing).
