This Is Audi’s Idea Of An Electric Off-Roader, And It’s Nuts

  • Audi teased this AI:TRAIL quattro concept as a look into an electric off-roader.
  • The AI:TRAIL is part of a “quartet” of Audi electric concepts.
  • This car will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2019.

Imagine seeing this on the trail.

Electric car concepts are really heating up, and this auto show season will be slammed with them. Take Audi, for example — they’re bringing along new electric concepts to the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. Among them is this crazy electric off-roader, called the Audi AI:TRAIL quattro concept.

Apart from the photo above, Audi didn’t give much actual information about the off-road concept. However, they did say this is a “concept study for an electrically driven off-roader of the future.” The AI:TRAIL is part of a “quartet” of electric vehicles that started with the AICON concept back in 2017.

As electric cars start to grip more of the marketplace, there may be an actual business case for electric off-roaders. Sure we have electric sedans and family haulers right now, but the off-road community hasn’t really been covered yet. Of course, much of the reason for that omission comes down to the range issue. Since this is a “concept study”, Audi didn’t address that particular question with this announcement. Also since it’s a concept study, they may not address it at all, as it doesn’t seem very likely this will actually make it to production.

That said, it does show where Audi’s thinking in terms of styling and electric performance. The company did recently launch the e-tron SUV. There’s the striking, angular e-tron GT coming in late 2020, as well as the Q4 e-tron SUV. Whether a dedicated off-roader will actually see the light of day is a bit questionable, but the AI:TRAIL looks fun nonetheless.

We will (hopefully) have more details on Audi’s latest concept when we cover the Frankfurt Motor Show in the coming weeks. Speaking of off-roaders, that’s where Land Rover also plans to reveal the all-new Defender. Stay tuned to TFLcar.com for more updates!
