We had our hopes up for a moment.
The 2020 Toyota Supra is available with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine in Japan, but not in the United States. Unfortunately, despite recent developments, that isn’t set to change.
Automobile noticed, strangely, that the Supra actually had emissions certification in the U.S. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) gave the green light to sell the vehicle in the state, along with BMW models that share the engine. Ever since January, we have been bouncing back and forth as to whether the company will introduce the entry-level model here. Right now, the Supra is officially getting a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, but that’s it.
In Japan, the four-cylinder Toyota Supra is available in two states of tune. You get either 194 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, or 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The more powerful engine allows the car to hit 60 in 5.2 seconds, according to Toyota. All Supras, regardless of engine, come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The unearthed CARB documents gave some hope of a cheaper entry-level Supra, but it isn’t happening. At least not right now, as Toyota told Road & Track and Jalopnik. “BMW took steps to certify an engine for a variety of uses. At this point, Toyota’s plans for the Supra in the U.S. include only the 3.0-liter inline-six that will be in the 2020 Supra when it goes on sale this summer (emphasis added).”
Unfortunately, it seems the engine is not coming anytime soon then. If you’re curious, check out the full CARB certification document below. Stay tuned for more Supra updates, as we’re driving the car next week!
