When the brand spanking new 2016 Chevy Volt rolled onto the stage at the Detroit Auto Show last month I did one of those cartoon bulging eye impressions.
I thought to myself I’ve seen this car before with a KIA, Honda and Hyundai badge.
First impressions can be deceiving but I thought to myself that GM designed and built an Asian compact car. Sure the design details are different but the stance and the overall proportions are the same as the popular Honda Civic.
I’ll let you decide. Below are the Honda Civic, the Hyundai Elantra and the KIA Forte all in blue to help make my point. Were these cars separated at birth or am I being blinded by the blue color?
Please let me know in the comments below.
OK, the wheels maybe different but look at the pointy nose, the sloping hood line and the nearly identical raked back windshield. Perhaps I’m being too critical as all modern cars look alike. Perhaps this is the look of the modern economy car, or in this case electric car. But no matter what you think of the design of the Toyota Prius, you have to admit that it stands out in a crowd of economy cars.
And that’s a good thing in my opinion because it means drivers who want to show off their green credentials, do so in a Prius. I’m note sure that will be the case in the new 2016 Chevy Volt. Last time a car manufacturer built and designed a green car that looked like a economy car it didn’t go so well. I think we all know what happened to the Honda Insight.
