The Toyota Motor got hit today with the maximum fine under U.S. law of $16.4 million because it failed to notify the government of accelerator pedal
flaw.
The pedals were subject to a massive world wide recall earlier this year.

"We now have proof that Toyota failed to
live up to its legal obligations," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray
LaHood said in a statement. "Worse yet, they knowingly hid a dangerous
defect for months from U.S. officials and did not take action to protect
millions of drivers and their families."
Today's fine was imposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is the biggest in history. The previous largest fine was leveled at General Motors for windshield wiper failure in 2002 and 2003 and GM models.
Toyota can appeal the penalty.
