Could the Next-Generation Mustang Share Its Platform with the Ford Explorer?

Ford is simplifying their lineup to just five modular platforms.

CEO Jim Hackett reportedly delayed the next-generation Mustang until 2021.

A year-long delay in the next-generation Mustang’s arrival is, in itself, disappointing. However, after Ford crossed the 10 million threshold, another piece of news has surfaced. The current car is built on a bespoke platform, but that will likely change with the next iteration.

According to Automotive News, the next-generation Mustang could move to one of Ford’s five new modular architectures. The idea is to share those platforms across its entire lineup to reduce costs and improve flexibility among its models. The next-generation Mustang will still be rear-wheel drive. However, it could – drum roll please – share a platform with SUVs like the Explorer and Lincoln Aviator.

Wait, what? Enthusiasts will likely cringe at the idea of a crossover sharing a platform with the Mustang. The Mustang’s chief designer, Darrell Bahmer, says it offers Ford more flexibility. While the company is staying quiet on the details of the next-generation Mustang, Behmer said it “is still going to be a strong, well proportioned vehicle.” He even went further to say, “it’s not going to bastardize Mustang.”

Is it a good idea?

The current, sixth-generation Mustang debuted as a 2015 model. Ford also refreshed its pony car for 2018. Opinions are mixed as to whether the next-generation Mustang sharing its platform with a crossover is a good idea. As with Ford’s original – now scuttled – idea to use the Mach 1 name on an electric crossover, it’s a debate that will rage on for the near future. Unfortunately, it seems we’ll have to wait a year longer to find out.

What do you think of Ford possibly building the Mustang on a modular platform with the Explorer? Keep in mind the next Explorer and Lincoln Aviator will be on a rear-wheel drive based platform. Let us know what you think in the comments below!
