While a production Mazda turbo-diesel is not here yet, and we do not yet know if or when it will come – Mazda continue to develop the diesel technology further. This Mazda Skyactiv Prototype diesel racer is proof. Mazda plans to enter this car into the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and be the only manufacturer with a diesel powered race car.
The number on this prototype are impressive. The 2.2L motor has 51% of production parts, but now makes 451 HP and 580 lb-ft of torque. This should get this 1,984 lbs car (with no driver or fuel) moving pretty quick. In Daytona setup, this car should be capable of approximately 186 MPH top speed.
We hope Mazda can figure out how to bring the diesel to the showrooms. It does not have to have 580 lb-ft – just half that would do for the Mazda6.
