R.I.P. Hummer

Hummer

General Motors today announced that the deal to sell Hummer brand to the Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd is dead.

The Chinese company (which is best know for manufacturing off road vehicles) pulled out of the deal because it could not get approval from Chinese regulators within the proposed deal timeframe the company said in a separate announcement.

GM will now wind down the division best know for brawny four-wheel-drive SUVs.

The Hummer H2 has the dubious distinction to be named as one of Time Magazines Worst cars ever built.

”We are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be
completed,” said John Smith, GM vice president of corporate planning
and alliances.

”GM will now work closely with Hummer employees,
dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and
responsible manner.”

Automotive insiders point to the Chinese government as the reason for the failure of the sale to close.

China already has over a hundred car manufactures and the Chinese
government wants fewer and not more Chinese brands, plus the Chinese
government especially does not want to be seen as supporting the
purchase of a brand best known for military style vehicles with poor
gas mileage in today’s world of “green” politics.

Hummer is the second sale of a GM brand to collapse after the sale of Saturn also failed as part of GM’s recent restructuring.
