There is no doubt this will be the most expensive automotive test drive ever.

Members of the Obama administration's autos task force are scheduled to
take GM's new Volt rechargeable electric car for a spin Monday as they
visit GM in Detroit to help determine the viability of the struggling
automaker.

General Motors and Chrysler asking for a combined 39 billion dollars from the government to help them stay  in business.

GM says the Volt is capable of going up to 40 miles on charge before it needs to use its gas engine.

According to the Associated Press:

"Task force members apparently will begin their day with a tour of GM's
sprawling tech center in suburban Warren, Mich., followed by a tour of
Chrysler's nearby Warren Truck plant, where the new Dodge Ram pickup is
put together. The tech center houses GM's U.S. design and engineering
operations, as well as a special facility for the Volt."
