The 2015 VW Golf R debuted at the North American International Auto Show this week and my, my, my the links have never looked so good.
The new Golf R is powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder EA888 TSI® engine, good for 290 horsepower and 280 lb/ft of torque. That’s a gain of 34 hp and 37 lb/ft from the outgoing model. Power goes to the permanent 4MOTION all wheel drive system via a six-speed manual or DSG transmission. The manual will scoot you to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds, the DSG is just a bit quicker at 4.9 seconds. Volkswagen estimates a highway fuel economy of 31 mpg with the manual transmission, an improvement from the last generation’s 27 mpg.
The Golf R gets a few unique styling cues that distinguish it from the GTI. Among them are specially designed bumpers, 18″ aluminum-alloy wheels, newly designed LED running lights, and a nifty little dual exhaust with four chrome tips. The radiator grille as well as the front fenders, brake calipers, and trunk lid all sport the R logo.
The inside gets a similar treatment with leather sport seats, leather wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, and instruments specific to this R trim line.
Much work has gone into the handling components of the Golf R. Purists will be happy that the stability control system can now be deactivated. Optional is the DCC dynamic chassis control, giving drivers the choice of three modes: Comfort, Normal, and Sport. Additionally there is a Race mode designed for high speed track driving.
Volkswagen has added a new progressive variable ratio steering rack, which it claims makes the Golf R easy to operate at parking lot speeds while maintaining a quick and direct feel in the twisties.
It all looks good on paper, but as always, we want to drive it before we pass judgment. The new Golf R is expected to go on sale in the first quarter of 2015.
