New Kia K4 Design Details Revealed Ahead of Its Full New York Debut

We still don't have technical details, but we do now know what it looks like

If you’re curious what the new Kia K4 looks like, here are the first official shots!

Before it makes its first official appearance at the New York Auto Show next week, Kia revealed the first exterior and interior shots of the car that will replace the aging Forte in its lineup. We don’t have too much in the way of actual specs just yet, but we can make some design-based inferences on what to expect when the K4 does make its U.S. launch in the coming months.

From every angle, the new Kia K4 takes inspiration from both its K5 sedan sibling’s sharper lines, as well as the EV9 SUV. Both the front fenders and rear quarters have these sharp lines that emphasize the car’s width, while slim LED lights run all the way across the rear fascia and have vertical elements at the front. One outcome of Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy is that these cars now have visual cues unlike anything else in each segment, and that now applies to the K4.

Another common theme we’re seeing with these newer four-door cars is a fastback sort of look. Instead of your conventional (boring) three-box sedan, the K4 has a sportier coupe-like roofline. It looks like this car still has a standard trunk rather than a hatchback design that would offer a bit more practicality, but we’ll be able to get up close and personal in New York next week. (You can as well, as the show opens to the public on Friday, March 29 and runs through April 7).

What about the interior?

Looking inside the new Kia K4, you get a layout that again mirrors the EV9 as well as the brand’s other latest models. The dual screens are part of the mix, as are slimmer HVAC vents and a host of buttons on the center stack and the flat-bottom steering wheel. That Opposites United idea comes up again as the passenger door card is largely green like the seats, console lid, dashboard and steering wheel, while the driver’s-side door panel is black along the top and around the door handle. The steering wheel badge is also offset, which is a bit strange.

What we don’t yet know about the new Kia K4 is exactly what powers it. Odds are, we’ll see familiar options crop up here like the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine and a 1.6-liter turbocharged option. That has not been confirmed yet, though, nor has the possibility of some kind of hybrid option similar to the Hyundai Elantra.

Stay tuned until March 27 — that’s when we’ll have a complete picture for the new Kia K4 and much more from the New York Auto Show.
