GM’s March sales were up significantly across all brands, driven by crossover demand.

March 2018 saw double-digit growth across almost all of GM’s brands from this time last year. In fact, total retail sales were up 14%, thanks in large part to booming crossover sales. Buick saw huge sales growth at 22.2%, with the Encore seeing its best sales month ever. Chevrolet was also up 11.5%, including truck sales. All the while, retail sales of GMC models were up 20% – again including truck models. Cadillac saw a smaller growth share, at 5.3%, but sales still increased over March 2017.

Here’s General Motor’s month by the numbers (includes truck, fleet sales):

Brand March 2018 sales March 2017 sales MoM change (%) Best-selling model
Cadillac 14,494 12,861 +12.7% XT5 (6,188 units)
Chevrolet 199,367 172,458 +15.6% Equinox (31,940 units)
GMC 55,646 49,948 +11.4% Terrain (15,579 units)
Buick 26,834 20,957 +28% Encore (15,118 units)
ALL GM 296,341 256,224 +15.7% Equinox (31,940 units)

Crossovers are king of GM sales

Among all of GM’s brands, a crossover was the best-seller, every single time in March 2018 GM sales reports. The winner, by a wide margin, was the Chevrolet Equinox. In March 2018 alone, you all bought nearly 32,000 Equinox models. The crossover surge also pushed GMC to achieve it’s best March ever in the brand’s history.

Cadillac moved up mostly thanks to increased XT5 sales. Sales of the model were up 17% from this point last year, and car deliveries were up 7%.

Chevrolet is GM’s volume seller, by far. The Equinox certainly helped it earn that distinction this month. Chevy crossover sales were up 39%, with the Trax, Equinox, and Traverse seeing their best March sales months ever.

GMC’s crossover sales were up 42% in March 2018. It was the best March sales month for the Acadia, and the best sales month period for the Terrain.

Finally, Buick crossovers were up by 50%. The Encore, which sold more than 15,000 units last month, helped Buick achieve those figures. March 2018 was the Encore’s best sales month ever, and the Envision achieved its best March. Sales of the larger Envision were also up 6% from this point last year.
