Chrysler announced today that they are issuing a recall for nearly 870,000 SUVs due to a potential brake problem. A problem with corrosion could cause the brakes in affected vehicles to become firmer and harder to use than what owners expect.

The cars included in the recall are the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango for the model years 2011 through 2014. The problem is with crimp joints in the brake boosters. These joints are susceptible to corrosion if exposed to water. That could then allow water to access the brake boosters and if the water freezes, the boosters won’t assist with braking as they’re intended.

The issue first came to Chrysler’s attention when customers complained about braking feeling firmer than they were used to experiencing on their cars. There has only been one known accident as a result of the problem, but no injuries were reported.

The solution to the problem comes in two parts. First, all affected vehicles will have a shield installed to protect the boosters from exposure to water. Second, any boosters that are found to be working improperly will be completely replaced, all at no charge to vehicle owners.

Even if the boosters are replaced, the shield will still be installed on the vehicle. The recall has also prompted Chrysler to modified the design of the boosters in vehicles still in production to include specially coated crimp joints that will make them more corrosion resistant and prevent water from accessing the boosters.

Chrysler will be contacting owners of affected vehicles to notify them of the recall and the need to bring their vehicles in for service.
