2019 Audi A8 L Review: (Almost) King of the Rings

OVERVIEW

Audi just rolled out their fourth-generation Audi A8 L with a wheelbase that’s extended 30 cm – or nearly two feet – over the base model. This latest A8 is all-new for 2019, and it redefines Audi’s design language. It dons a familiar face to the outgoing model, but provides a sumptuously modern interior. There’s also seamless connectivity and state-of-the-art driver assistance features packed into the Audi A8 L, which exhibits an athletic stance and a proportional form.

The exterior leads off with a broader, more upright Singleframe trapezoidal grille. Here, it’s flanked by larger air intakes. In profile, the proportions of the 2019 Audi A8 L highlight the flowing form. It sports well-defined front and rear wheel well arches. The rear view emphasizes the wide stance with the full horizontal length dynamic lighting strip.

COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE

Entering the cabin, the first thing you notice is a large, upright dashboard design with high-quality materials. The dash trim wraps artfully and seamlessly into the doors. A theatre-like lighting display appears upon unlocking the vehicle. That’s followed by a personalized ‘welcome’ in the virtual cockpit, while the audio tweeters emerge and the air vents open. An optional Premium Air Quality feature is available to provide ionized air and a selectable aroma.

A wide array of standard fare is available on the 2019 Audi A8 L. That includes heated 18-way power seats and a power tilt and telescoping steering column. Of course, both have memory settings. Audi has also upgraded the dual-screen multimedia system. There, you get two stacked touchscreens with up to seven different passenger profiles. The system also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

Available options include a rear passenger relaxation seat, aluminum optic control buttons and adjustable rear matrix LED reading lights. Wireless charging is also available, as is a Bang and Olufsen surround sound audio system. You can even get front and rear heated armrests, dual-pane acoustic glass and front 22-way adjustable seats.

DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS

This 2019 Audi A8 L establishes a new benchmark in driver assistance and convenience systems. In the driver assistance category, the A8 L features the world’s first laser scanner in a production vehicle. Its Adaptive Cruise Assist is a ‘hands-on’ system that assists the driver with acceleration, braking and steering. It works at highway speeds and in traffic jam scenarios, provided the driver keeps their hands on the wheel.

Predictive Active Suspension is another first. The system is able to detect a potential side collision and raise the chassis by 3.1 inches within half a second, helping to channel the impact toward the vehicle’s strongest structural element, while preparing the cabin to better protect passengers. Check out a video of how that works below:

The Audi A8’s 360-degree camera system provides a virtual image of the car’s surroundings. That allows the driver to spin and zoom the image for a better view while parking. Vehicle Exit Assist delays the opening of the door through the electronic latch system if a vehicle is approaching from the rear.

PERFORMANCE

The source of power in the 2019 Audi A8 L is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The new powerplant puts out 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The mild hybrid’s motive force is distributed to Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. While the V6 is the only option available at launch, a V8 version will be available in 2019. So on the performance front, this model would be top dog, if not for the larger engine on the horizon.

On the whole, the 2019 Audi A8 carries itself with modest grace. Even so, it is extremely capable in its performance attributes. Acceleration is brisk and responsive with no turbo lag. The ride quality is firm, but extremely smooth when equipped with Audi’s Predictive Active Suspension.

The car’s handling characteristics lean to the sporty side, thanks to the firmer ride, but it’s not uncomfortable. The 2019 Audi A8’s dynamic all-wheel steering enhances maneuverability and low speeds, and provides more precise steering at higher speeds.

TFLCAR’S TAKE

The 2019 Audi A8 L is clearly a strong contender in the luxury segment – even in its base V6 configuration. In fact, there are so many technological features on offer, it truly makes you wonder where luxury cars will head from this point.

Yes, it’s expensive. But if you’re seeking the last word in luxury, comfort and technology, it’s worth every penny. The V8 version, when it emerges next year, should prove to be even more desirable. Audi will cover both models by way of a 4-year/50,000 mile new vehicle warranty.

2019 Chevrolet Camaro Gets a New Nose – You Wanted it, You Got It [News]

You guys asked for it, now it looks like you’re getting it.

The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro is getting a new nose, among other things. One of the most talked about and controversial styling dilemmas for General Motors has been the front end of the early 2019 Chevrolet Camaro. That appears to be changing.

Chevrolet just announced that the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS will debut this new front end at the 2019 SEMA show in Las Vegas along with their new Shock yellow show color.

“There’s a fresh look for the 2019 Camaro, which is restyled, reinvigorated and offers more choices and new technologies,” said Steve Majoros, director of Chevrolet Car and Crossover Marketing. “It’s the perfect canvas for personalization, and the new Shock color and available accessories demonstrate only some of the possibilities customers have to make the Camaro entirely theirs.”

The new front and rear styling will make its way on to the LS and LT models as well. There will be new “dual-element” headlights and LED “signature” lighting. This addresses one of the largest complaints about the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro’s styling. In addition, Chevrolet will revise the grille, fascia and hood. The ZL1 will not get the updated design as well. GM says it keeps its “airflow optimized front-end styling.” The RS package will received the updated headlight design.

Rear (taillight) design is now LED throughout. However, there’s a slight difference between trim levels. The LS and LT have red taillights, while the RS, SS and ZL1 will have dark tinted clear lenses Chevrolet calls “natural-density.”

Smart move?

Time will tell if the rushed restyling satisfies critics. Chevrolet says they will have several vehicles on display at the 2018 SEMA show including many classic vehicles.

Chevrolet spent little time putting together a styling update for the Chevrolet Camaro. That’s because complaints were numerous, as the comments in our 2019 Camaro Turbo 1LE video made clear.

Jaguar Land Rover Adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Support, For a Price [News]

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support will come to certain 2019 models.

When we tested cars like the Jaguar XF Sportbrake and the E-Pace, one of our biggest criticisms was the lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. The company is now addressing that criticism by updating its 2019 models, it announced today. Now, certain Jaguar and Land Rover models will integrate with your smartphone, connecting via the car’s infotainment touchscreen.

The caveat, however, is that it will only be available on certain Jaguar and Land Rover models. Specifically, it’s available from the 2019 model year onwards, on cars equipped with JLR’s InControl Touch Pro or Touch Pro Duo infotainment systems. Unfortunately, 2018 and older model vehicles are out of luck – even if they have those infotainment systems. The company has rolled out that infotainment system across the Jaguar and Land Rover model ranges, but it doesn’t stop there. With nearly any model you choose, the Smartphone Pack which adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support costs $300. It’s only offered as standard equipment on the new I-Pace.

In addition to adding the Smartphone Pack, Jaguar Land Rover also made a few minor changes to their infotainment system. There’s a minor graphical refresh on the home screen, as well as changes to button placement on the media screen.

Faraday Future Hits Trouble As It Lays Off Employees, Announces 20% Pay Cuts [News]

Faraday Future has been working for years to get its first production electric car the ground. Now, it seems they’ve hit more issues, as the company announced that it had to lay off employees and cut salaries by 20 percent. Faraday announced the pay cuts following a dispute with their financial backer, Hui Ka Yan, who runs one of the most successful property businesses in China.

Financial Trouble

Faraday founder Jia Yueting has cut his own yearly salary to just $1 until the company can find new funding. Other executives have volunteered to take pay cuts beyond the original 20 percent blanket cut imposed on the other employees. According to an excerpt from their statement, as reported by Engadget:

“The Company is committed to monitoring its finances and will reevaluate [the decision to cut pay rates] with the goal of restoring salaries once financing is available…The Company is taking concrete steps, including funding opportunities with those who share our vision…No further information related to the financial state of FF including additional business operations will be communicated at this time.”

The rest of the statement outlines the pay cuts and states the company’s commitment to further progress. Although, the aim to seek funding opportunities with “those who share our vision” appears to be a swipe against Evergrande Health Industry Group Ltd., a unit of Hui’s real estate empire. Earlier this year, that company planned to buy Faraday’s assets, but Faraday contends it did not inject funds into the company. That news came despite the fact, Jia alleges, that Faraday fulfilled its obligations. Evergrande denies those claims, and Faraday is looking for funding elsewhere.

What about the car?

As for the car itself? The FF 91 is set to come standard with a 534 kW, dual-motor setup that makes 716 horsepower. However, a 3-motor setup is also in the works with over 1,000 horsepower. Battery Packs range from 86.7 kWh, on the low end. 108.3 kWh and 130 kWh on the top end.

0-60 MPH times look promising, with the highway sprint over with in under 3 seconds, 2.39 to be exact. Plus, a claimed range of over 300 miles on a single charge. It looks like Faraday is bringing the fight to Tesla, if they can continue to find funding.

We will keep our ears open for more news regarding Faraday Future and their… future. Stay tuned to TFLcar.com for the latest news, views & real-world reviews and, of course, more information on Faraday Future.

What’s It Like Living with a Ford Fiesta ST? 5,000-Mile Long-Term Update [Video]

It’s a fun car, but…there is a but.

We’ve had our long-term Ford Fiesta ST for nearly six months now. Since then, it’s defended its honor against every type of car on the track. Our game show, “Is It Faster Than a Ford Fiesta…ST?” has seen the Fiesta square off against the likes of the an all-wheel drive Volkswagen Alltrack, as well as a Mustang Bullitt and a Dodge Challenger Hellcat. And…it lost, pretty much every time.

Tuned Ford Fiesta ST vs. stock Fiesta ST - Game Show
If the normal Fiesta ST doesn’t have enough oomph, there is always the tuning route. [Photo: TFLcar]
Here’s the rub: while the current-generation U.S.-spec Ford Fiesta ST packs a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, it’s not all that fast in a straight line. It does have 197 horsepower and 202 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It also weighs just over 2,700 pounds. That, in addition to sticky summer tires sport-tuned suspension makes make the Fiesta zippy around town. It’s a fun car, to be sure, but with a 9.79 second 0-60 run in the video above…yeah, it’s not fast. And passengers? Forget it – its performance is dulled even further by bringing your friends along.

Mind you, at least when you’re driving alone, the Fiesta is great fun to drive. One important feature is Sport Mode, which you hit by disengaging the traction control. Hold the button, and the Fiesta actually turns the system off, so you can have some tire-chirping fun. When you’re not in the mood for fun and games, the Fiesta will return over 30 mpg. All that for under $18,000 isn’t a bad deal.

2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt vs. 2017 Ford Fiesta ST - Is It Faster Than a Hot Hatch?

Buy it, lease it, or forget it?

As far as reliability is concerned, the Fiesta ST hasn’t gone wrong in its first 5,000 miles. It does need some new tires after its dozens of stints on the track, but mechanically speaking, it’s still in good order. However, while the Fiesta is cheap, its interior reflects some cost-cutting, particularly in the dash and how the seats have worn. Still, its willing engine, exhaust note and snappy transmission make it a blast to drive.

Whether you’d want to live with this Ford Fiesta ST depends on what you’re willing to compromise. If you can put up with a hard ride, not too much speed and tight quarters, it’s definitely a fun proposition. If you’re looking for size, comfort or more performance, you might want to size up to a larger car.

Top Gear UK Announces New Hosts – A Fresh Start? [News]

Top Gear has been playing a game of musical hosts ever since they lost the original trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. Today, the British motoring show announced its two newest hosts. The first is Paddy McGuinness, an English comedian and TV host. He will be joined by Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff, who captained a Cricket team. Fortunately, Chris Harris will still be a part of the show.

Since the original trio left

Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc and Chris Harris took over hosting Top Gear initially. Chris Evans faced criticisms in his first series, which forced him to step away. Rory Reid since replaced Evans, and that team stuck until this year. In May, Matt LeBlanc, the frontman, decided to leave. After parting with Rory as well, the BBC had to find not one, but two new hosts for their show.

Who are the new guys?

Forgive me if my American-ness is showing. But surely I’m not the only person who hasn’t heard of these new hosts, right? Cricket is a sport that we don’t play in the US on any large scale, granted. Freddie was apparently quite good at it while he was still in the game. As for his car prowess? He bought a Lamborghini this year.

McGuinness feels altogether more qualified. He’s a current TV presenter and the host of a show called Stars in their Cars. Oh, he just bought a Ferrari California. Not exactly the ‘car person’s choice’, but at least there is a horse on the badge.

How do we feel?

Since Clarkson, Hammond and May left the show, there has been a fair amount of uncertainty. However, there also have been bright moments. Harris, LeBlanc and Reid seemed like they had the start of a good thing going during their time together on Top Gear. But in the end, the travel was too much for LeBlanc. He wanted to be closer to friends and family, and we can appreciate that.

We won’t rule out these new hosts until we watch a whole season of the show. However, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous for the show’s future. The fact that we’re going on a third round of new hosts in nearly as many years may be a troublesome sign.

We will just have to wait until next year see how the new group performs. Fingers crossed.

Until then, stay tuned to TFLcar.com for the latest news, views & real-world reviews.

Fiat Chrysler Announces Sale of Magneti Marelli Parts Business for $7 Billion [News]

Fiat Chrysler Sells Magneti Marelli Parts Business for $7 Billion

Magnetti Marelli has been under Fiat’s control since 1967.

Japanese auto parts manufacturer Calsonic Kansei recently agreed to buy Fiat Chrysler’s Magneti Marelli parts division for 6.2 billion euros ($7.1 billion), both companies announced today. The agreement, set to close next year, marks the first major decision under FCA’s newly-appointed CEO, Mike Manley. Manley took over as Chief Executive following the illness and death of former CEO Sergio Marchionne.

The transaction will create one of the largest automotive suppliers in the world. Together, the combined Magneti Marelli CK Holdings will generate more than 15.2 billion euros ($17.4 billion), according to the joint statement.

Magneti Marelli was originally founded in Milan, Italy in 1919. Calsonic Kansei also has a long heritage, stretching back to 1938. While both companies have been around for decades, they merge at a time where new technologies are disrupting the traditional automotive sector. Electric cars and self-driving technologies dominate advancements in the industry, and the goal for this merger is to cut costs and share technologies to drive further advances.

The sale itself, which is still subject to regulatory approval, allows Manley to invest time and resources toward FCA’s other challenges. As of late, the company has been trying to expand in the Chinese market, particularly with Jeep. A Chinese-specific Grand Commander hit the market earlier this year. The brand also accounts for 91 percent of Fiat Chrysler’s sales in China, according to an August Wall Street Journal report.

Mike Manley said of the sale, “The combined business will continue to be among FCA’s most important business partners and we would like to see that relationship grow even further in the future.”

2019 Nissan Maxima Will Debut at LA Auto Show – Here’s What To Expect [News]

2019 Nissan Maxima

Hot on the heels of the new Altima, the 2019 Nissan Maxima will premiere in Los Angeles next month.

We’re a month out from the LA Auto Show, and this is usually the time manufacturers will tease what they have up their sleeves. Last week, Mazda teased what is, in all likelihood, the new Mazda3, and now it’s Nissan’s turn. Rather than just tease the car, as they did with the Altima earlier this year, they went a different route. Here is the next generation of its big brother – the 2019 Nissan Maxima. No mystery this time – Nissan completely pulled the wraps off the new model.

Okay, perhaps “new” is a bit too radical a description. Nissan didn’t radically alter the look from the current Maxima. Instead, it sports a refreshed face, including some new LED headlights and fog lights. The Vmotion grille remains, as does the Maxima’s floating roof design.

Nissan did announce the inclusion of Nissan Safety Shield 360, a driver assistance suite, as available equipment. That includes features blind spot monitoring, a 360-degree Around View monitor, automated emergency braking, lane departure warning and high-beam assist. While Nissan didn’t show it off here, we’d expect at least minor changes to the new Maxima’s interior as well. Particularly, the infotainment system will get some updates.

Mechanically, there likely won’t be any radical changes either. The 2019 Nissan Maxima will likely soldier on with its base 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission. Currently, that engine makes 300 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque.

Stay tuned for the 2019 Nissan Maxima and more from the 2018 LA Auto Show next month. Subscribe to The Fast Lane Car and TFLnow for more news, views and real-world reviews!
