Subaru is cooking up some special plans for this weekend’s Boxerfest in Pennsylvania.

If you’re a fan of the Subaru WRX or the BRZ coupe, there’s some potentially great news headed your way. On September 27, the automaker plans to roll out two “limited production, enthusiast-focused editions” of both cars at this year’s Boxerfest in York, Pennsylvania.

Does that mean that Subaru is finally, finally going to give us a WRX STI or BRZ STI? Both, dare we dream!? Well…let’s hold up for a minute.

Here’s the rub about that, as feral as some enthusiasts are for that to happen (and I’m right there with you — I think Subaru needs to do it). The teaser itself likely debunks the company going all-out on an STI here: The WRX shown in the image above still has the tS badging. It does have an appropriately huge carbon fiber wing on the back, so that does lean in a more hardcore direction.

What else will Subaru do, exactly? The existing tS models for both BRZ and WRX already up the ante over their standard counterparts with specially tuned suspension, beefier brakes and, in the WRX’s case, more aggressive Recaro seats. Subaru could just go even harder with all that, or there’s the potential we could see at least a bit more power. Is it likely? Probably not, since I’d wager a more powerful variant would come with an STI debut.

Fortunately, we don’t have too long to wait until Subaru shows us what it has in store, since we’re only talking about a few days. I could also be completely off base and this is the big reveal we’ve been waiting for. That said…I’m not counting chickens just yet, and while I think the automaker could well bring a new, full-fat STI to fruition — they’ve teased at it a couple times, at least — this particular reveal (probably) isn’t it. Keeping this special edition under the tS badge instead of calling it something like the STI Sport#, however, does leave the door open. As ever, we’ll just have to see.
