Porsche’s best-selling Macan is getting an overhaul this week.
It’s tough to believe, but the highest-volume model in Porsche’s lineup is already a decade old. Granted, the automaker’s made a few substantial updates over its lifespan, but the original first-generation Macan launched all the way back in February 2014. Now, the second-generation model is nearly ready to make its appearance for the 2025 model year, and there’s already one enormous shift: This one’s entirely electric.
That’s hardly surprising given the direction automakers are headed, but we are talking about Porsche here. The same Porsche that builds the Taycan, which I’d argue is among the best EVs you can currently buy. You can definitely see the resemblance in the new Macan’s design, though Porsche’s designers worked in a second set of LED lights into the lower front fascia. In the back, they integrated the signature single light bar stretching the car’s entire width.
“The new Macan is the first model that we are electrifying from an existing, established product identity,” said Porsche’s design VP Michael Mauer. In designing this new generation, he goes on to say there is a tricky proposition between balancing elements that are “quintessentially Porsche” with innovative cues and technologies.
Speaking of technology, Porsche did already give us a glimpse into the new Macan’s interior. The new layout includes a triple-screen setup (if you spec the optional passenger display) akin to Porsche’s latest models, including the Taycan. Instead of a touchscreen to manage the climate controls, though, the Macan uses a simpler bank of switches like the new Cayenne. Drivers get a 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster, while both the center and passenger displays measure out to 10.9 inches.
Under the new body, the 2025 Porsche Macan EV will ride on the brand’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform. In its “Turbo” configuration, the new SUV won’t be a slouch by any stretch of the imagination, putting out 603 horsepower and a whopping 737 lb-ft of torque through a dual-motor setup. Less potent and less expensive options will certainly be part of the mix as well, though we don’t know exactly what Porsche is planning for those trims in this specific application just yet.
Fortunately, we’ll know much more about the new Porsche Macan this Thursday, January 25. Trim walk details and pricing will follow, and we expect this new electrified model to carry a premium over the old gas version. Those who don’t want to make the EV jump will still be able to buy the current Macan for a while longer, though Porsche has not said how long they plan to run the “old” gas-powered model alongside the new EV. It’s likely we’ll still see the gas Macan live on for a few more years.
