Toyota’s Bringing Jazzed Up TRD Camry and Avalon Variants to the 2018 LA Auto Show [News]

Will this be enough to make Toyota's sedans truly exciting?

Toyota recently refreshed the Camry and Avalon, and in doing so (at least aesthetically), the company targeted the Achilles’ heel of the old models. They weren’t exactly exciting. Dependable as they were, they were dull. Both cars are much more enjoyable to drive than their ancestors, and it looks like the stable may grow once again with new TRD Camry and Avalon models.

Toyota teased this image via Twitter for the upcoming 2018 LA Auto Show. There’s not much to go on at the moment, but we can see both cars will at least get some aesthetic upgrades in the new packages. Some TRD wheels, red brake calipers and a sporty-looking front spoiler are on tap. It also looks like each car may get more aggressive, grippy tires as part of the TRD upgrade.

It’s unclear whether a TRD Camry or Avalon would be its own separate model, or a package on one of the existing trims. Right now, the 2019 Camry XSE V6 is the sportiest among its stablemates, while the Touring model is the top-rung Avalon. Both come with a naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 packing 301 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. If Toyota were to create a TRD model – akin to the company’s TRD Pro off-road models – it would make sense to go with the V-6 engine.
