2019 BMW 8 Series Convertible: Quite the Stunner, If You Can Afford Its $120K Price Tag [News]

BMW’s striking new 8 Series loses the roof, but keeps its turbocharged V8 engine.

The 2019 BMW 8 Series Convertible will hit the market in March 2019 as an M850i launch model. This large grand touring convertible is equipped with a turbocharged 523 horsepower, 4.4-liter V8 that makes 553 lbs-feet of torque. The 2019 BMW 8 Series Convertible comes with only one way to control that power, an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. If you’re not in the market for a droptop, BMW also revealed the 8 Series coupe back in June.

According to BMW, this all-new convertible is capable of a 155 mph top speed and a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds.

The 2019 BMW 8 Series Convertible utilizes a state-of-the-art suspension, one that appears to encapsulate BMW’s top handling pedigree. The company states, “the design principle of the double-wishbone front suspension makes it possible to separate steering and damper functions. As a result, high lateral acceleration forces are possible without compromising ride comfort.”

What about that soft top?

The convertible top can be raised or lowered in 15 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph. It stashes itself under a hard, “double-bubble” cover behind the rear seats that mimics the roofline. A removable wind deflector can be positioned between the front and rear seats to minimize wind buffeting and optional neck warmers are available. The vents are part of the headrests and have three speed settings.

BMW upholstered the seats in standard premium Merino Individual leather. Passengers can access the rear seats (designed to fold flat 50/50 for increased cargo space) using a thick leather strap hanging off the back of each front seat.

One of the most notable design elements of the exterior is the chiseled front end. It’s aggressive and almost menacing with a very intense headlight design. The BMW 8 Series Convertible features standard Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with Laserlight technology. According to BMW, these are the slimmest headlights of any BMW model.

The M850i xDrive Convertible will have a $121,400 MSRP with an additional $995 destination fee. Stay tuned for more updates closer to its on-sale date!
