Camry keeps monthly sales lead despite weak June; Altima jumps into second [Sales Report]

2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Toyota’s ubiquitous Camry kept the midsize car sales lead – and the overall sales lead, too – despite a weak month as sales dropped 13 percent from last year.

The Camry had a comfortable 2,000-sale lead for June and has a very comfortable 27,000-sale lead for the year. Both leads are over the second-place Nissan Altima, which rode a strong month to leap over the Honda Accord and into second place.

The Altima and the Camry were the only two to eclipse 30,000 in sales.

The Camry’s closest sales competition actually comes from the compact Honda Civic, which it has been fighting neck-and-neck with all year. The Camry beat the Civic by only 700 sales for the month and is less than 10,000 sales up for the year.

After the Camry, the next four on the list had positive sales for the month. The Altima, Accord, Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu all had sales gains over June 2015. The only other car with a sales gain over last year was the Subaru Legacy, which was the most improved at 11 percent.

2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

The Hyundai Sonata continues its roller-coaster year, down 22 percent after starting the year strong. This is the third month a row for double-digit drops after starting the year with three months straight of double-digit gains. For the year, though, the Sonata is up nine percent, and has a 40,000 sales lead over the next highest competitor, which happens to be its sister car, the Kia Optima.

The Optima’s sales are way down over 2015, joining the VW Passat and Mazda 6 in having disappointing sales years. No one can match the boulder-off-a-cliff fall of the Chrysler 200, though, even though sales were up over last month.
