The new 2017 Subaru Impreza just debuted at the New York International Auto Show, so it was a surprise to us to be able to catch a prototype of the upcoming high-performance 2018 WRX STI so quickly. Just one of the advantages of living near the Rocky Mountains where many manufacturers perform high altitude winter testing are rare encounters such as this one. Roman and Nathan happened to be in the right spot at the right time to bring you this first look at the next-generation WRX STI.

While the 2017 Impreza has gone more mainstream than its predecessors, Subaru has seemingly done a 180-degree turn when developing this vehicle. Not all of the details have been confirmed yet but some of the design features are a bit unconventional… but we like that. The company has never been mainstream and that has always been part of the attraction for people who want affordable all-wheel-drive turbo charged fun. Here is a little of what you can expect:

  • More than the 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque found in the current model
  • A VERY light vehicle
  • Updated transmission
  • Near perfect weight distribution
  • Improved fuel economy
  • STI-exclusive exterior paint

Keep in mind, the vehicle in the video is still a prototype and thus, the final production version is likely to differ slightly from what’s seen below. Whatever it turns out like, we can’t wait to wring out the new STI’s unique engine.
