Fiat brings a whole new interpretation of its classic convertible with the production version of its 2017 Fiat 124 Spider. The new car is being unveiled this week at the 2015 LA Auto Show. This is what happens when you take a Mazda MX-5 Miata chassis, insert a feisty little turbocharged motor, and wrap it in Italian bodywork.
The Miata connection is most visible in the profile, but that is not a bad thing. The front and rear facias are differentiated and give the 124 a meaner appearance, especially in these first official images on the car in black.
The propulsion comes courtesy of the Fiat Abarth 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This is more than the Skyactiv powerplant in the MX-5, and the Abarth exhaust note should help the character of this Spider.
The first glance reveals that Fiat made many good decisions with the 2017 124 Spider. Who wouldn’t like a 2016 Miata with more power? We will reserve judgement until we get a chance to evaluate the car.
