Offered as a more comfortable, luxurious, but highly capable version of the Toyota 4Runner, the 2014 Lexus GX460 has always seemed like the “odd one out” in the Lexus lineup. Caught in between the crossover RX-series and the Range Rover-like LX series, it blended some of the best features of the RX, such as compactness and a bit of sport, with some LX features, such as a terrain management system and a body-on frame. Despite its capability, the second-gen GX never truly established an identity for itself, and its $54,690 base price frustrated many buyers as a result.

However, Lexus was listening closely–the refreshed 2014 GX460 will start at a more reasonable $49,995, or a price cut of $4,710 over the previous generation. With some 2013 GXs selling for nearly $70,000, Lexus must have realized that its competitors, such as the BMW x5, Cadillac SRX, and Mercedes ML-class, offered many of the GX’s features for as much as $20,000 less. Definitely a wake-up call.

The 2014 GX sees some important improvements over the current generation. The LUV (or “Luxury Utility Vehicle”) receives a revised front fascia, with a new Lexus hourglass grille  and distinct Lexus LED running lights, while the rear receives some prominent new LED taillights. The new GX will also be available in two trim levels: standard and luxury. A standard-equipped GX will include a new 8-inch multimedia monitor with traffic and weather data, HD radio capability, a back-up assist camera, and full Bluetooth connectivity. Opt for the luxury trim, starting at a more hefty $61,625, and you’ll get adaptable air suspension (a la Range Rover Sport), a blind-spot monitoring system, and automated park assist. along with the standard trim’s features.

As for the rest of the GX, it’s much more suited to its class of luxurious, capable SUVs in both price and creature comforts. Just don’t expect much from its fuel economy.
