The Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Camper is one of those vehicles a multitude of Americans pine for. It is the spiritual successor of the Volkswagen Bus’s Westfalia that vanished from our shores many moons back. A ride like this may Ripple though your chi, especially if you’ve been Truckin‘ with guys like Casey Jones and Scarlet Begonais… okay… enough Grateful Dead references.
Even without the hippie jokes, the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Camper is a sweet camping idea.
Two clean diesel engines power the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Camper’s front wheels. A 1.6-litre TDI with 102 PS (about 100hp) capable of getting 54.3 mpg (Imperial) and a 2.0-litre TDI with 140 PS (about 138 hp) 49.6 mpg – Imperial – do the heavy lifting. A DSG auto-transmission is available with both engines
When thinking about the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Camper, it’s all about the interior/camping packaging:
“Inside the Caddy, once the rear seats are folded down, and the front seats tipped forward, the double bed simply unfolds to give a flat double bed measuring 1.1 x 2.0 m, complete with a privacy curtain which attaches around the interior windows. For extra space, the awning, measuring 2.3 m x 2.0 m, simply attaches to clips around the tailgate to provide extra outdoor living space. When travelling, the table, chairs and awning fit into bespoke storage spaces in the rear.
When not camping, the fold-out bed behind the rear seats can be removed to give a generous 1.6m3 of space for bikes or other equipment, or if the rear seats are folded forward, there is up to 3.2 m3 or a 1.8 m long loadspace available. If more storage space is required, the standard roof rails mean a roof box or bike rack can be added.
Although the weather outside may not have you reaching for the map and planning your first camping trip of the year, Volkswagen’s preparing for the summer ahead, expanding its range of camping and lifestyle vehicles with the launch of the new Caddy Maxi Camper. This compact and affordable five-seater, with a fold-out double bed, two deck chairs, portable table, electric cool box and awning as standard is surely the perfect antidote to the inclement spring.” – – Volkswagen AG UK Media
The Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Camper bases at £23,397. If Volkswagen ever brought something like the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Camper to the USA (they won’t) it would probably base at about $40,000-ish. Considering what a full-blown camper costs, the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Camper is a comparable bargain.
