While this new recall plays out, approximately 900 Corolla Cross Hybrid SUVs are under stop-sale.
Toyota recently issued a recall for its 2023 and 2024 model Corolla Cross Hybrid, pointing out a braking problem that could increase the risk of an accident if left unaddressed. The automaker filed documents with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in late September, and those documents were published on the agency’s public website this week.
While “braking problem” typically suggests a problem with the physical system, that is not quite the case here. Instead, Toyota says a software “error” within the skid control electronic control unit (or ECU) is to blame for a loss of power braking assist when entering into a corner. The issue, if triggered while a Corolla Cross owner is trying to navigate a corner, could lead to a hard-feeling brake pedal with reduced braking force, leading to longer-than-intended distance to actually come to a stop and potentially causing a crash.
The issue affects 42,199 Corolla Cross Hybrid models — the gas vehicles are not included in this recall. Impacted hybrid versions of Toyota’s popular small SUV were manufactured between June 1, 2022 and September 10, 2024. While this is the only model the company lists at the moment, it does mention in its filing: “Certain other Toyota vehicles are equipped with a brake actuator supplied by this supplier (Bosch) containing similar [ECU software]. Toyota is confirming whether the condition [as described in the recall report] can occur in other models with similar software.” However, it also states that other Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in the U.S. have a different brake actuator assembly, and as such will not fall under this recall.
Toyota plans to notify affected 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid owners between November 5 and November 19 by mail. Dealers are already aware of the issue, and new Corolla Cross Hybrid SUVs already in inventory are under stop-sale until repairs are completed. When owners go in, dealer technicians will update the skid control ECU software, free of charge.
