Ford didn’t have any major reveals at this year’s LA Auto Show, but they did have one interesting Easter egg.
You know, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat has had its own way these past few years. With 707 horsepower, few cars on the road can match it for grunt. The last Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was close to that figure, with 662 horsepower rampaging from its 5.8-liter supercharged V8. Sadly, it went out of production in 2015, just as the Hellcat was introduced. Since then, we’ve just been waiting for a new GT500.

Now, it seems our waiting may finally pay off. Michael Martinez from Automotive News caught this interesting display at the 2018 LA Auto Show. There aren’t any huge reveals on the Ford stand this year, but there is a Mustang. Not just any Mustang, though…a Shelby GT500. Underneath it, Ford is showing the date “01.14.19”. Hmm, what date could that be? In January 2019, we’ll be off to none other than the 2019 North American International Auto Show.
Ford has been painfully quiet on details for the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. What we do know about it, however, is that it will have more than 700 horsepower. That puts in Hellcat territory. It will have a supercharged V8 engine, and we’re fairly confident it will be similar to the 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 in the GT350 and GT350R.
Someone did leak a photo that’s supposedly the new GT500 from a dealer convention in October. On that basis, we know it will likely have a huge wing on the back, as well as high-performance brakes and an aggressive front end.
So it’s official folks: the Shelby Mustang GT500 is coming soon. Mark your calendars.
